Haematology is important in order to know the state of health of fish species.
Some haematological parameters of inter-generic hybrids African catfish (Clarias
anguillarisx Heterobranchus bidorsalis) were investigated in North
east Nigeria. The study aimed at investigating the haematological competence
of the hybrids for survival in culture conditions in the region. Most fish farmers
in the North east shade their ponds concrete of earthen due to stress as a result
of harsh weather conditions in the region. Red Blood Cells (RBC) were significantly
higher (2.46±0.03x103 μL-1) in hybrid CaxHb
(Heteroclarias). However, MCV and MCH were significantly (p<0.05)
higher (138.07±1.98 fl and 46.53±0.70 pg, respectively) in pure
line of Heterobranchus bidorsalis. MCHC values of pure line C. anguillaris
and their maternal hybrids ♀CaxHb♂ (30.03±1.96 and 35.23±0.62
g dL-1, respectively) varied significantly (p<0.05) from those
of Heteroclarias (34.57±0.33 g dL-1). However, all
the blood parameters of fish species recorded during this study were within
the healthy ranges for fish. The results of this study show that Heteroclarias
have more haematological competence for survival in culture conditions in the
North east region. |

Growth and survival of C. anguillaris, H. bidorsalis and their
hybrids fingerlings were investigated under semi arid condition. Thirty five
days old fingerlings (32.03±0.69-44.57±1.47 g and 4.70±0.04-5.74±0.12
cm) stocked at 5 fish m-2 were reared for 9 months in polyethylene-lined
fish pond (2.5x2.x1.2 m deep) in triplicates (♀Cax♂Ca, ♀Cax♂Hb,
♀Hbx♂Hb and ♀Hbx♂Ca as treatments I, II, III and IV,
respectively). The results showed that final mean weights were higher (pooled
8322.00±29.82 g = 509 g fish-1) in the reciprocal hybrids
(♀Hbx♂Ca), followed by pure breeds, ♀Hbx♂Hb (7632.70±321.88
g = 508 g fish-1) and ♀Cax♂Hb (5980.30 g = 352 g fish-1).
Lowest (4191 g = 232.83 g fish-1) mean final weight was recorded
in the pure breeds of ♀Cax♂Ca. Mean Weight Gain (MWG) and Mean Daily
Weight Gain (MDWG) were also higher in ♀Hbx♂Ca. No significant (p>0.05)
variation was observed in the final mean weight and mean daily weight values
of the reciprocal hybrids compared to those of their paternal pure breeds ♀HbxHb♂.
Survival was higher (70.67±1.33%) in pure line ♀Cax♂Ca followed
by ♀Cax♂Hb, ♀Hbx♂Ca (69.33±10.91, 65.33±2.67
and 61.33±7.06%, respectively). Positive percentage heterosis was observed
in both hybrids progenies. Based on the result of this study, the hybrids of
♀ H. bidorsalisx♂ C. anguillaris performed better
than hybrid ♀C. anguillarisx♂H. bidorsalis and the
two parental progenies. This indicates that, there are great potentials for
exploiting hybrids of African catfishes in the semi arid zone of Nigeria. The
performances of the hybrid fingerlings to adult stage in the study area needs
to be re-examined to confirm the performance of hybrid species in the harsh
weather conditions of the zone. |

The study on haematological indices of Clarias gariepinus and Clarias anguillaris was carried out to compare and contrast their blood group, genotype and haematological profile. Little is known about the blood group and genotype of the species. The knowledge of the blood group and genotype will be useful in the genetic study of the species. Test tube techniques based on agglutination tests was used for blood grouping, while the genotype was determined by hemoglobin electrophoresis. The haematological parameters, blood group and genotype of Clarias gariepinus (n = 12) and Clarias anguillaris (n = 12) males and females, were studied. The mean value of WBC count (μL) in C. gariepinus males was 1621.67±10.83 μL and females 9033.33±13.63 μL, respectively. The mean RBC counts for males were 3.0833±1.23 μL and females 3.85±0.46 μL and females 3.8500±0.46 mm3, respectively. The mean MCHC for males and females were 33.15±0.1 g dL1 and 33.08±0.1 g dL1, respectively. Mean PCV for males was 51.62±6.79% and females 65.02±18.63%, respectively. Mean Hb. for males was 18.62±1.87 (g dL1), while the females had mean 22.12±5.823 (g dL1). The mean MCV for males and females were 172.17±43.03 and 169.300±31.64554 pg. The genotype of all the males and females were the same (AA). The blood group recorded 83% with O+, while 18% had AB+, respectively in the males and females. The WBC counts of males and females C. anguillaris were 7733.33±648.90 and 8033.33±16.47 μL, respectively. The mean RBC counts for males and females were 2.60±0.45 μL and 2.60±0.44 μL, respectively. The MCHC of both males and females were the same 33±0.00 g dL1. The mean PCV of males and females were 87.2±1.97 and 66.73±30.93%, respectively. The mean Hb for males and females were 29.77±1.20 and 22.47±10.13 g dL1, respectively. The mean MCV for males and females were 356.97±6.16 and 274±92.60 pg, respectively. The blood group, genotype and agglutination tests results were 83% Rh- O+, 18% Rh-AB+ and 100% AA, respectively and were similar to the pattern in humans. |
