  As defence against oxidative stress, living systems employ antioxidants that they either produce or take up from the environment. Among these lutein has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant that also functions as a signal molecule. The goal of this study was to establish the influence of several lutein concentrations on swine embryo development in vitro, in order to improve culture media. Pig oocytes were cultured for 45 hours at 37°C in 5% CO2 atmosphere; in M199 containing several lutein (2.5, 4, 5, 8, and 10 μM) concentrations. Then, they were fertilized in TALP medium using spermatozoa capacitated by centrifugation and incubated for 16-18 hours. Afterwards, the presumed zygotes were cultured in NCSU-23 droplets supplemented with lutein (2.5, 4, 5, 8, and 10 μM) in the same conditions. Their development was assessed at 48 and 120 hours. The number of embryos that had developed to the 2 cells, 4-8 cells and morula stages was compared to the control, and the differences analyzed using the analysis of variance and interpreted using the LSD and Duncan tests. Lutein (2.5 μM) supplementation has a beneficial effect on embryo development to the morula stage. This is apparent at 48 hours as well as 120 hours.

  There were made experiences on 40 rams, 20 of choline ecotype and the other 20 of mountain ecotype. Eight ejaculates were collected from every ram in September, October and November. The ejaculates were evaluated by the volume, motility and concentration of sperm. We made two collections per week and the average per month of the evaluated parameters was statistically analyzed. Analyzing the data one can conclude that irrespective of the ecotype and collection period, the quality of ejaculates is good for processing in order to cryopreservation. In October the ejaculates are of a superior quality. The choline ecotype is superior to the mountain one if the differences are statistically provided, concerning sperm motility and concentration.

  In last ten years, Romania occupies the first place within the European countries concerning the number of exploited sheep heads, destined to slaughtering. Over 97% of the volume of this export is represented by the Turcana young sheep, and difference of 3 % is represented by Tsigai young sheep. The determination of the chemical composition of the meat, the surface of Longissimus dorsi and leg of mutton area from Tsigai young sheep, Suffolk x Tsigai and German blackface x Tsigai intensive fattened is the aim of our paper. The determination of the chemical composition of the meat allows a deep analyze of its quality traits, making possible the evolutive characterization of the breed. The work methodology involved analyze of the chemical composition of the meat harvested from cutlet (Longissimus dorsi, LD), according to Weende pattern: water content, dry matter, crude protein, crude fat and crude ash. The results obtained show that the Tsigai young sheep has the highest water and lowest dry matter content, and German blackface x Tsigai, the lowest water and the higher dry matter content. The groups of cross breed achieved higher Longissimus dorsi (LD) and leg of moutton area, compared with the pure breed. Compared with Tsigai breed, Longissimus dorsi (LD) area determined was higher with 13.94% to Suffolk x Tsigai, and 2.14%, respectively to German Blackface x Tsigai. Leg of moutton area was higher with 24.09% to Suffolk x Tsigai, and 9.26%, respectively to German Blackface x Tsigai.

  Carcasses of Tsigai breed and Suffolk and German Blackface crossbred lambs fattened in an intensive system were subjectively (according with EUROP system) and objectively evaluated. After conformation, carcasses of Suffolk crossbred lambs were included in U and R, German Blackface x Tsigai in R, and carcasses from Tsigai pure breed in R and O classes. After the layer of fat, carcasses of Suffolk crossbred lambs were included in 2 and 3 classes, German Blackface x Tsigai in 3, and carcasses from Tsigai breed in 3 and 4 classes. Suffolk and German Blackface crossbred lambs had a higher (P<0.001) muscle proportion in all carcass parts than Tsigai breed lambs. Tsigai breed had a higher fat proportion than Suffolk and German Blackface crossbred lambs in almost all carcass pieces, but significant differences were founded in carcass rests (P<0.001). It was concluded that Suffolk and German Blackface rams could be used for crossing with Tsigai ewes to produce lambs with better carcass conformation and leaner carcass.

  Genetic characterization of one population of Romanian Tsigai breed was investigated using microsatellite markers. A total of 61 individuals were genotyped for 14 microsatellite loci. A total number of 126 alleles were detected, with a range between 6 and 14 alleles per locus. The observed heterozygosis was less than the expected heterozygosis values in more than half of the cases, detecting heterozygote deficiency at these loci. The Fis value per population was positive (0.0981), indicating a general risk of inbreeding.
