  The phytochemical constituents and some neuropharmacological activity of the methanolic leaf extract of Cissus cornifolia (Bak.) Planch [Family: Vitaceae] was evaluated in mice employing various models. The preliminary qualitative phytochemical analysis carried out on the methanolic leaf extract of Cissus cornifolia revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids/terpenoids, stilbenoids and tannins. The neuropharmacological effects of the methanolic leaf extract of Cissus cornifolia on CNS were evaluated using diazepam sleeping time, exploratory behaviour (head dip tests), motor coordination and acute toxicity studies in mice. The extract at tested doses (10, 20 40 mg kg-1 body weight i.p.) produced reduction in exploratory behaviour (head dip test), beam walking assay (foot slips) and potentiate the diazepam-induced sleep in mice; the LD50 was found to be 775.0 mg kg-1 body weight i.p. in mice. These results corroborates with the traditional usage of this plant as a remedy against mental derangement as confirmed by the sedative activity expressed by the extract.

  The anticonvulsant effects of the ethanolic flower extract of Newbouldia leavis (Bignoniaceae) were studied in mice. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of ethanolic flower extract revealed the presence of cardiac and saponins glycosides, flavonoids, steroids and tannins. The ethanolic flower extract had an intraperitoneal (i.p.) LD50 of 1264.9 mg kg-1 body weight in mice. Anticonvulsant studies were carried out on pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced and 4-amino pyridine (4-AP)-induced seizures in mice. The results showed that the extract under study possesses slight dose-dependent anticonvulsant activities between 40-60% (50-200 mg kg-1 body weight) protection against PTZ-induced convulsion; and also a dose-dependent delay on the onset of convulsion was observed in 4-AP-induced convulsion in mice ranging from 8.0±0.45 to 11.2±1.31 min (50-200 mg kg-1 body weight). The data obtained correlate to the traditional claim of this plant in the treatment of convulsion due to petit mal seizure.

  The proximate, minerals and amino acids contents of wild melon (Citrullus ecirrhosus) seeds were determined. The results for proximate analysis (% DW) showed a composition of 3.73±0.25 moisture, 2.12±0.08 ash 26.36±0.10 crude protein, 50.67±0.76 crude lipid, 2.17±0.29 crude fibre, 18.69±0.82 available carbohydrate and energy value of 601.7±8.75 kcal/ 100 g. The seeds amino acids profile revealed that for adults but leucine, lysine and threonine are below the requirement value for children. The overall result implies that seed of the wild melon possessed the potential to be used as a source of nutrition.

  Plants are used widely in the tropics and sub-tropical Africa and Asia for the treatment and cure of various illnesses such as malaria, diarrhoea, burns, gonorrhoea, stomach disorders and other infectious diseases; among which are livestock and poultry related diseases. Present studies on the preliminary phytochemical composition of the leaf of this plant revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenols lectins, triterpenes and carotenoids among others. Studies on the swab content from the navel of the day old chicks of both strains (broilers and layers) had revealed the presence of several gram positive and gram negative organisms such as E. coli, Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Proteus sp., Klebsiella sp. and Corynaebacterium. The susceptibility tests on the isolated organisms by the extract under study had showed an appreciable dose dependant zone of inhibition ranging from 13-25 mm. The activity of the extract (400 mg mL-1) can be favourably compared with that of the standard antibiotic-Oxytetracycline (10 mg mL-1) particularly between the E. coli and Streptococcus with 25:30 mm and 20:22 mm as inhibition zone respectively where no significant difference was observed. The extract exhibited a highest MIC of 12.5 mg mL-1 against Staphylococcus sp., while concentration of 25.0 mg mL-1 was noted as the MIC values against both E. coli and Streptococcus sp.

  Analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the ethanolic flower extract of Newbouldia laevis were studied in rodents. Investigations were carried out on acetic acid-induced writhing in mice and carrageenan-induced hind paw oedema in rats. The results showed that the ethanol extract possessed significant (p< 0.001) anti-nociceptive activity between 50 and 200 mg kg-1 intraperitoneally (i.p.) in mice and also dose dependent anti-inflammatory activity between 50 and 200 mg kg-1 (i.p.) in rats. These effects were compared favourably with that expressed by ketoprofen (10 mg kg-1 i.p). From the results obtained, although relatively toxic the extract exhibited highest anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities at the dosage of 200 mg kg-1 (i.p.). These data corroborate with the traditional use of this plant in the treatment of rheumatic pain and other types of pain reported in traditional medicine.
