Effect of Ailanthus altissima and Zizyphus spina-christi on Bilharzial Infestation in Mice: Histological and Histopathological Studies

Abstract: The objective of this study is to test the ability of certain traditional plants for reducing the hazardous effect of schistosomiasis without any side effects. The chloroform extract of Ailanthus altissima stem bark and the ethanolic extract of Zizyphus spina-christi root were selected and tested through histological and hsitopathological studies. Treatment with both plant extracts reduced number of worm burden, ova count, granuloma size and count as well as improvement in histopathological picture of liver, kidney and spleen. The chloroform extract of A. altissima showing a more pronounced improving effect against organs damage caused by parasitic infection.
