ABSTRACT
The acquisition of genomic islands and plasmids from a common gene pool, has shaped the evolution of bacterial pathogens. Interestingly, determinants used for infection can be also used (at least in some cases) for surviving in natural environments and the same antibiotic resistance determinants can be found in infective and environmental bacteria. This suggests that natural environments might have a relevant role in the evolution of human pathogens. It is review about the potential role of natural (non-clinical) environments in the evolution of bacterial pathogens.
