INTRODUCTION

Teke Plateau is a high plateau that contains many mountain chains which lie mostly Southwest to Northeast and contains wide river basins and plains which lie at top of the mountain chains. Hilly mountain chains called Maşta Mountains, Boncuk Mountain, Boncuk Kiri, Eren Mountain, Mihli Ardiç and Karadiş Mountain which erect behind the coast band form Boncuk Mountains (Fig. 1).

The research area is located within the Mediterranean Phytogeographical Zone. It shows transition characteristics between Mediterranean Flora Region and Irano-Turan Flora Region according to geographic position and in terms of flora and climate. The studied area is in C2 square according to grid square system given by Davis (1965-1985).

The altitude is 180 m at Ören on South and rises to 2340 m at Kocaeren Hill, 2270 m at top of Boncuk and 2100 m at Karadiş Hill. The area is poor according to stream regime. Waterways are at valley basins on South and North sides. Nearly all streams are dry in summer.

The meteorological data was taken from two stations; Ören and Gölhisar stations. This data was obtained for the years between 1964-1990. The mean annual temperatures were for Gölhisar 12.5°C and for Ören 19°C. The hottest months were July for Gölhisar with 23.1°C and August for Ören with 28.2°C. The mean annual total precipitation was 928.2 mm for Ören and 554.5 mm for Gölhisar. The most rainy season was Winter and Spring for each district.

When the climatic data was used in Emberger’s formula of rain and temperature factors, It was determined that the research area had a Mediterranean Humid Climate at part of Ören and Mediterranean Semi-Arid Climate at Gölhisar on southeast part (Akman, 1999).

The geological structure of the research area mostly contains rocks belonging to the Mesozoik Tersiyer periods (Atalay, 1987). The most abundant soil type in the area was Red Mediterranean Soil that can be found everywhere except in Dirmil and Ibecik districts. Brown forest soils, colluvial and alluvial soils were seen (Burdur and MuIla Cities Land Plan, 1998, 1999).

The research area has a vegetation that contains different plant associations under taken geographic situation, geomorphologic structure and climatic conditions. Andropogenic factors effected the climax vegetations. Seconder unchangeable plant formations were formed.

Pinus brutia Ten. and Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold, Reise Mariazell: 8, t.s.n. (1785) subsp. nigra var. caramica (Loudon) Rehder forests are the most widespread and economically useful forms. P. nigra var. caramica forests spread out at large areas between 1200-1900 m. Most of them are old forests after 1700 m. They have poor flora and they can be qualified as monumental forests.

Pinus brutia forests are seen at west sections and spread out from 180 to 1200 m. They form pure formations at upper parts and have poor flora. These forests form mixed formations with magues elements at lower parts.

Quercus coccifera L. formations are seen at some places where the Pinus brutia forests were destroyed and in the open areas among the Pinus brutea forests. They form pure formations above Ören.

Fig. 1: The map of studied area (1/200.000)

One of the other formations in the research area is Juniperus excelsa M.Bieb., Besch. forests. These forests are situated on the north and south sides of Boncuk Mountains from 1200 to 1900 m.

On Southwest of Ballik village at 1400 m, the Cedrus libani forests are present. They have spread out at large areas on south and southwest of Boncuk Mountains. These forests are the beginning point of Cedrus libani forests at Southwest part on Toros Mountains. They have rich flora and contain many seedless.

The High Mountain Steppe Vegetation is seen after 1900-1950 m at the calcareous backs and top of hills. At these areas, Daphne oleoides Schreb. subsp. oleoides and Sideritis pisidica associations are present. At the soily backs and snow hollows Astragalus angustifolius Lam. subsp. angustifolius and Marrubium bourgaei Boiss. subsp. bourgaei associations are also present.

In the research area, the plants where often seen at the road sides are as follows; Centaurea solstitialis L. subsp. solstitialis, Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra, Capparis ovata Desf. var. herbacea (Willd.) Zoh., Convolvulus arvensis L., Euphorbia rigida M.Bieb., Daucus carota L., Eryngium campestre L. var. virens Link, Quercus coccifera L., Reseda lutea L. var. lutea, Glaucium flavum Crantz, Ononis spinosa L., Lotus corniculatus L. var. corniculatus, C. varia L. subsp. varia, Xanthium spinosum L., Picnemon acarna (L.) Cass., Lactuca serriola L., Anchusa azurea Mill. var. azurea, Anemone coronaria L., Papaver rhoeas L., Torilis arvensis (Huds.) Link subsp. neglecta (Spreng.) Thell., Knautia integrifolia (L.) Bert var. bidens (Sm.) Borbas, Sanguisorba minor Scop. ssp. Muricata(Spach) Briq., Cardaria draba (L.) Desv. subsp. chalepensis (L.) O.E. Schultz, Avena barbata Pott ex Link subsp. barbata, Echium italicum L., Tragopogon longirostris Bisch. ex Schultz var. longirostris and Papaver dubium L.

Vitex agnus-castus L., Nerium oleander L., Tamarix smyrnensis Dunge, Salix alba L., Platanus orientalis L., Inula viscosa (L.) Aiton, Styrax officinalis L. were seen at the stream beds and sides.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Nearly 1500 plant specimens from Boncuk Mountains were collected periodically during different vegetation periods in every season between September 1999-July 2002. All specimens were pressed, dried and preserved according to the herbarium techniques and some were photographed. These were identified with the help of Flora of Turkey and the East Aegean Islands (Davis, 1965-1985; Davis et al., 1988; Güner et al., 2000) and various floras.

Alphabetical order is followed for the list of families and lower taxa. Locality, collection date, collecter name and sample numbers follow the plant name. Author abbreviations follow Brummitt and Powell (1992).

The endemic species were categorized according to IUCN Red Data Categories (IUCN, 2001) and Ekim et al. (2000). The abbreviations are as follow: VU-Vulnerable, LC-Least concern, CR-Critically endangered, EN-Endangered. All herbarium specimens are kept in Ege University Botanical Garden and Herbarium Research and The Application Center (EGE).

The area is completely within the C2 grid square, therefore C2 Burdur; Boncuk DaIlari was omitted in the citations. Localities where the plant specimens have been gathered were listed in Appendix 1. Each locality shows the name of place, elevation, date of gathering plants and number of collection.

The following abbreviations were used in the text;

Ir.-Tur. : Irano-Turanian
Euro-Sib. : Euro-Siberian
Medit. : Mediterranean
E. Medit. : East Mediterranean
m : Meter
subsp. : Subspecies
var. : Variety
E : Esat Çetin
T.F. : The taxa which added from Flora of Turkey to list of flora
Lok. : Locality

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This research was carried out by using nearly 1500 plant specimens collected over a period of 3 years. As a result of the identification of the plants specimens, 858 taxa (subsp. and var. included) belong to 339 genera and 83 families were determined.

Nine of these taxa were nonflowering vascular plants (of Pteridophyta) and 7 taxa were belonged to Gymnospermae while the remaining 842 were Angiospermae. One hundred and thirty taxa were monocotylodonae and the others were dicotolodonae.

The distribution of flora elements were not homogeneous. Mediterranean elements were mostly at west, southwest and northwest. Irano-Turanian elements were at Subalpine zone, on East, Northeast and Southeast of the region. Euro-Siberian elements were a few. This situation has been appeared as a result of climatic difference, ecologic differences, geographic position and geomorphologic structure. While the west sides of region were effected by Hot Mediterranean Climate; the east part was under the effect of Terrestrial Climate.

Table 2: The reach genera at the area and other regions
Description of research areas is given in Table 1

When the number of taxa is taken under consideration, the family Fabaceae ranks first with 99 taxa (Table 1). Among all 83 families, Fabaceae with 99, Graminea 81, Compositae 80, Labiatae 74, Cruciferae 58, Caryophyllaceae 55, Umbelliferae 35, Liliaceae 32, Scrophulariaceae 29, Boraginaceae 26, Rosaceae 23 and Ranunculaceae 16 taxa were the most richest families in the research area. The taxa belonging to the first 12 families form about 71.5% of the total taxa.

As the major genera, Astragalus with 28, Galium 16, Silene 16, Alyssum 15, Salvia 13, Centaurea 12, Sedum 10, Trifolium 9, Ranunculus 8, Allium 7 and Anthemis 6 have the most taxa (Table 2).

Most taxa in Astragalus are known as steppic plants of Irano-Turanian phytogeographical regions.

The presence of many Astragalus members shows the terrestrial climate effects and subalpine zone. The East part of research area starts from 1200-1300 m. Altitude. Many Gramineae members were found.

Table 3: The richest families according to endemism

Table 4: The endemic plants which belong to CR and EN in Red Data Book of Turkish Plants

uercus coccifera and Pinus brutia which are the characteristics plants for Mediterranean vegetation were found at west and Southwest parts of the region. The steppe vegetation that spreads out at Upper Mediterranean and Mediterranean Mountainous Zone was present at east part of the region. In addition, Juniperus excelsa and Quercus infectoria subsp. boissieri associations which are seen at steppe transition regions were also seen at large areas at the East sides of research area.

All these findings show that the research area is a typical transition area. The different ecological data of the area, the variation of habitats and elevation cause this high number of taxa.

Endemism: The number of endemic taxa was 180 and the endemism rate was 21% in the study area (Table 3). According to Red Data Book Categories (Ekim et al., 2000; IUCN, 2001), 166 of endemic plants belong to Red List Categories and have criteria. One hundred and thirty of these plants are in LC categories; 19 are in VU; 11 are in EN and 6 taxa are in CR (Table 4).

Saponaria kotschyi was put in CR category in Red Data Book, but the populations of this taxon were seen in the four different localities. There is no reduction in population therefore there is no extremely high risk of extinction in the wild and this taxon must be put in EN criteria.

Erysimum caricum has CR criteria according to Red Data Book. But, the populations of this taxon were found at many localities in the research area. Thus, there is no high risk of extinction in the wild and this taxon must be put in EN category.

Thlaspi papillosum was put in CR category, too. But according to IUCN Species Survival Commission 2001, it is not considered to be facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The population of this taxon is present at least 3 different regions; in Denizli, in Antalya and in Burdur. It is more appropriate to put this taxon in EN category.

Ebenus pisidica is in CR category in Red Data Book. It was described from Sandras Mountain. In Dirmil, its population was seen as small population and is facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. It can be damaged by human beings. As a result, it may be put in CR category.

Trigonella pseudocapitata populations were present in two localities but these populations were near one another. The area of occupancy estimated is less than 10 km2 and population size estimated to number fewer than 250 mature individuals. So this also must be in CR category.

Verbascum serpenticola was described from only Dirmil in one locality and it is facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The population of this taxon has CR criteria according to IUCN Species Survival Commission, 2001.

Campanula fruticulosa is known in two localities in Flora of Turkey. So it was considered in EN category by Ekim et al. (2000). This is suitable according to criteria of IUCN (2001).

Each of Alyssum caricum, Salvia nydeggeri, Gonocytisus dirmilensis, Scrophularia scopolii var. burdurensis, Verbascum latisepalum was described from only one locality in Flora of Turkey. Their extent of occurrence estimated are less than 100 km2 and populations of size number may be fewer than 250 mature individuals. These plants are facing high risk of extinction. According to Red data Book, they were considered in EN category. But they must be considered in CR category according to criteria of IUCN (2001).

Lathyrus tauricola was described from Bucak. It was gathered another locality from Dirmil. So, it was considered in EN category according to criteria of IUCN (2001).

Linum mucranatum subsp. gypsicola var. papilliferum, L. Pamphylicum and Verbascum reeseanum are known at least two different areas. They were also considered in EN category according to Red Data Book (2000) and IUCN (2001) criteria.

The high rate of endemism and variation of plants are due to lying of research area at the transition region. Two phytogeographic region intersect here.

The Southwest of Anatolia, where our research area lies, is one of the important centers according to endemism (Ekim et al., 2000). Present findings show the importance of region according to endemism and variation of plants. Because of this, the east part of research area is considered as an Important Plant Area under name of DoIu Boncuk DaIlari, IPA 55 (Özhatay et al., 2005).
