  This study describes the antioxidant, antibacterial activities of five different solvents [methanol, aqueous ethanol (ethanol-water, 70:30, v/v), acetone, ethyl acetate and water extracts of Passiflora wilsonii Hemsl. The results obtained in this study have considerable value with respect to various solvent extracts from Passiflora wilsonii Hemsl., showed varying degrees of antioxidant activity in different test systems in a dose-dependent manner. All solvent extracts of Passiflora wilsonii Hemsl. exhibited scavenging activities toward 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), superoxide anion and hydroxyl radicals. On the other hand, the ethanol fraction showed the highest antioxidant and antibacterial activities in most instances. This study verified that the ethanol extract have strong antioxidant and antibacterial activities which were correlated with its high level of flavonoids.

  Background: The optimal parameters of separation and purification of polyphenols from Pericarpium Granati were determined and the antibacterial activities against S. mutans in vitro were investigated. Methodology: Through comparing the static adsorption/desorption properties of five kinds of tested macroporous resins for polyphenols, HPD-450 resin was selected to investigate optimal purification parameters by dynamic curve experiments. The optimal purification conditions as follows: 9.0 BV of feeding solution at concentration of 3.2 mg mL–1 through the column at 3.0 BV h–1, then for desorption 60% ethanol-aqueous 3.5 BV at 2.0 BV h–1 eluted. The content of polyphenols was increased from 34.9±1.6% to 71.1±3.1% with a recovery yield of 85.5±3.7% according to the optimal parameters. Results: The present study showed that the MIC of purity of polyphenols was 6.25 mg mL–1. The acidogenicity of S. mutans can be significantly inhibited when the concentration was up to or higher than 1.56 mg mL–1 and the adherence of S. mutans can be significantly inhibited when the concentration was up to or higher than 3.13 mg mL–1 as well. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that polyphenols from Pericarpium Granati have significant activity against S. mutans and it is a good candidate for further development as an oral care agent for preventing dental caries.

  Background: QingLiCao has been used for the treatment of skin diseases such as eczematous dermatitis in China-Vietnam border area. However, the mechanism of treatment effect is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of pathogenic bacteria and fungus of eczematous dermatitis and evaluate the antioxidant activity of phenolic contents from QingLiCao, will be helpful to further understand the mechanism of action. Materials and Methods: The in vitro phenolic antimicrobial activity was determined using disc diffusion and antioxidant activity was evaluated by spectrophotometry. Results: The experimental results showed that the phenolics from QingLiCao had excellent antimicrobial activity to pathogenic bacteria and fungus of eczematous dermatitis, similar results were observed for the antioxidant activity. Conclusion: The results support the proposition that phenolic from QingLiCao might be a promising anti-eczematous dermatitis natural active ingredients merit further investigations.
