  Tianjin Bin Hai New Area (BHNA) is the third largest economic zone in China. This is an older industrial area that has been developing rapidly but with many historic sources of contamination. The concentrations of 16 individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed for priority control by the US EPA were quantified in 105 surface soil samples by the use of gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Multivariate statistical methods were used to characterise the mixtures and make comparisons in the patterns among areas. Concentrations varied among areas, ranging from moderate to relatively high. The coefficients of determination between concentrations of individual PAHs and total concentration of PAH (∑ PAH) increased with the number of rings. The first three factors from the principal component analysis (PCA) explained 81.6% of the total variation, while ten higher molecular weight (HMW) PAHs` loadings for factor 1 accounted for 51.0%. Based on the patterns of relative loading proportions of individual PAHs calculated by PCA, the primary sources were coal combustion, traffic emissions including gasoline, diesel oil, and the burning of natural gas. The spatial distribution of concentrations of fluorene had a poor spatial autocorrelation in the study area. The sites with the greatest potential risk due to exposure to PAHs were mainly distributed around the chemical industry parks.

  A systematic survey of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) including hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, δ-HCH and ΣHCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane metabolites (p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD and ∑DDT) in soils along the north coastal areas of the Bohai Sea, China, has been lacking. In this study, 31 representative surface soil samples were collected along the north coastal and riverine areas of the Bohai Sea to characterise the potential for adverse effects of ∑HCH, ∑DDT and their individual isomers and transformation products. Concentrations of ΣHCH and ΣDDT in soils ranged from less than the limit of detection (<LOD) to 3.0 x 101 ng · g-1 dw (mean: 3.5 ng · g-1 dw) and<LOD to 2.6 x 102 ng · g-1 dw (mean: 1.7 x 101 ng · g-1 dw), respectively. Compared with studies of OCPs in soils from other locations, concentrations of HCHs and DDTs observed in this study were moderate. Concentrations of OCPs observed in soils were generally less than proposed reference values. HCH residues were a mixture of historical technical HCH and current lindane sources. The pattern of DDTs was consistent with historical releases of technical DDTs. Selected soil physicochemical properties did not explain the sorption and/or partitioning of HCHs or DDTs.

  A number of Streptococcus species have been isolated from many animals. However, there have been no reports of infection with Streptococcus dysgalactiae Subsp. equisimilis (SDSE) in masked palm civets. The first occurrence of SDSE in masked palm civet was reported. Identification of the organism was made by phylogenetic analyses based on partial 16S rRNA gene sequences. The present result has implications for the ongoing control of SDSE in masked palm civets and evidences a host extension of SDSE.

  This study was conducted to test the hypotheses that dietary L-arginine supplementation may enhance the immune responses and resulting in the clearance against PCV2 in experimentally infected mice. The measured variables include: the PCV2 virus load in liver, spleen, heart, lung, kidney, ovary and serum on 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th day post infection (dpi); serum Interleukin-2 (IL-2), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-10 (IL-10), Interferon alpha (IFN-α), Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels on 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th dpi; serum Total Superoxide Dismutase (T-SOD) activity on 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th dpi. Results showed that arginine supplementation could significantly increase the serum IL-2 levels on the 9th and 11th dpi; significantly increase the serum IFN-α and CRP levels on the 11th dpi; significantly increase the serum IFN-r levels on the 7th dpi and significantly decrease the serum IL-6 levels on the 9th dpi. Meanwhile, the PCV2 virus genome was detected sporadically. Collectively, dietary L-arginine supplementation had beneficial effects on the cytokines profile in the PCV2 infected mouse and maybe could delay the PCV2 replication and/or clear the PCV2 in mouse model.

  Glucose-induced insulin exocytosis is coupled to associations between F-actin and SNARE proteins, although the nature and function of these interactions remains unknown. Toward this end we show here that both Syntaxin 1A and Syntaxin 4 associated with F-actin in MIN6 cells and that each interaction was rapidly and transiently diminished by stimulation of cells with D-glucose. Of the two isoforms, only Syntaxin 4 was capable of interacting directly with F-actin in an in vitro sedimentation assay, conferred by the N-terminal 39-112 residues of Syntaxin 4. The 39-112 fragment was capable of selective competitive inhibitory action, disrupting endogenous F-actin-Syntaxin 4 binding in MIN6 cells. Disruption of F-actin-Syntaxin 4 binding correlated with enhanced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, mediated by increased granule accumulation at the plasma membrane and increased Syntaxin 4 accessibility under basal conditions. However, no increase in basal level Syntaxin 4-VAMP2 association occurred with either latrunculin treatment or expression of the 39-112 fragment. Taken together, these data disclose a new underlying mechanism by which F-actin negatively regulates exocytosis via binding and blocking Syntaxin 4 accessibility, but they also reveal the existence of additional signals and/or steps required to trigger the subsequent docking and fusion steps of exocytosis.
