  Technical efficiencies of small scale dairy growing farms in Cukurova region of Turkey were estimated with a stochastic frontier model. A cost and return analysis was also carried out. Data were obtained through a questionnaire study and face to face interviews with farmers. Five inputs (grains and concentrates, green and dry fodder, labor, veterinary costs and other costs) and four inefficiency variables (herd size, cow quality, source of labor and share of milk in gross return) were used in the analysis. Except labor, all inputs of the production function part of the model were found to have positive elasticities. Mean efficiency of the sample farmers is estimated to be around 78%, ranging from 0.43-0.98 indicating that there is significant scope for increasing efficiency under current technology. Results of the inefficiency analysis indicate that 96% of the variation in milk production is due to inefficiency. Efficiency levels are all affected in the expected direction by the selected determinants of the inefficiency model however, only cow quality variable was found to be statistically significant. Comparison of the technical efficiency scores with the results of the cost and return analysis showed that one third of the farmers are producing milk above their selling prices. It was concluded that in the short run efficiency could be improved through methods (such as training) without requiring higher costs. However, in the long run structural enhancement such as introduction of high breed milking animals would be required.

  Technical efficiencies of cooperative member dairy farmers in Cukurova region were estimated with a stochastic frontier model. Effects of several factors on technical efficiency were analyzed. Farms were grouped based on their efficiency scores. Unit milk costs and gross margins per head cow were calculated for each farm group to give a sense what efficiency means in terms of some farm economic criteria. Concentrate feed and capital costs were found to have statistically significant contributions to milk production. Farm location, herd size, farming experience, on-farm feed growing, milking by equipment and grazing had effects on efficiency. However, only positive effect of farming experience and negative effect of grazing were statistically significant. Results show that 75% of the variation in milk production can be attributed to inefficiency. Mean efficiency score of the sample farms was estimated to be 68% implying there is plenty of scope to increase production under existing technology without incurring higher costs. Lower unit costs of milk and higher gross returns of efficient farmers show that technical efficiency is an important component of competitiveness. It was concluded that farmers should be encouraged and supported to increase use of concentrate feed and decrease share of grazing for obtaining higher milk yields. However, in the long run structural enhancements are required to transform small subsistence farms into more market oriented units. Economic analyses show that many farmers cannot cover full economic costs but they can still generate farm income since family labor does not incur cash costs.

  This study analyses technical efficiency of wheat growing farms in Southeastern Anatolia in Turkey. Data were collected from farms through a questionnaire study carried out following 2000-2001 growing season. Analysis was accomplished in two steps. In the first step, technical efficiency scores were calculated using an input oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). In the second step, Tobit regression analysis was used to identify determinants of technical efficiency. Results indicate that there is considerable scope for cost reduction in wheat farming in the Region. Main determinant of technical inefficiency was determined to be land fragmentation.

  This study estimates technical efficiencies of wheat growing farmers in Southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey using both parametric and non-parametric methods. The empirical application uses farm level data collected from 75 farms following 2003/2004 growing season. According to the results of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model, mean efficiencies of wheat growing farmers were estimated to be 0.72 and 0.79 for constant and variable returns to scale (CRS and VRS) assumptions respectively. Predicted technical efficiencies with stochastic frontier model vary widely among farms, ranging between 0.34 and 0.93 and a mean technical efficiency of 0.73. A strong correlation was found between the results obtained with output oriented CRS-DEA and stochastic frontier model. Based on these results, sample wheat producers could increase their output by 21-27% through better use of available resources. Further studies are required in order to determine causes of inefficiencies.
