  Mx proteins, as interferon-induced GTPases had been shown to have antiviral activity in different species. Recently, it has been recognized that an 11 bp-deletion in coding region of porcine Mx1 gene can lead to a special Mx1 protein isoform, which is lacking antiviral activity to influenza in vitro. This Mx1 11 bp-deletion polymorphism is a potential gene marker in pig breeding for disease resistance in future but there is no report on its relationship with economic traits in pig. It’s interesting to know, whether it associates with the economic QTLs or traits in commercial pigs, as well as its distribution in different breeds. In this pilot study, the pig Mx1 gene was found within three QTL regions which were related with fiber percentage, average daily gain and average backfat thickness. Seven economic traits of pure Landrace and Yorkshire were used to analyze the association with the Mx1 11 bp-deletion polymorphism. These traits include body length, body height, lean meat percentage, correction backfat thickness, average daily gain from birth to 100 kg, average daily gain from 30-100 kg and age to 100 kg. The results showed no statistical significant associations between the Mx1 11 bp-deletion allele and the seven porcine economic traits in the tested pure Landrace and Yorkshire population. We also detected the allele frequencies of the Mx1 11 bp-deletion in seven different porcine breeds and estimate its population homogeneity between breeds. However, more research is still necessary before this gene marker is utilized in porcine breeding.

  Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) is essential for modulating immune responses in mammals. In this study, one Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) of porcine IFN-γ (Po IFN-γ) was identified at position 1165 in intron I (deletion or insertion of A). Blood samples from 306 piglets were collected. The blood parameters, antibody levels of PRRSV, CSFV and PRV were measured for all piglets at 1, 17, 32 days ages, respectively. In addition, 11 growth traits were also measured for all pigs. Association analysis between the IFN-γ- + 1165 + A polymorphism and antibody levels, blood parameters and growth traits were conducted. Significant effects of the SNP genotype was observed on 1st day PRV Ab, muscle depth (p<0.01), 1st day CSFV Ab, 32nd day MCHC, hucklebone width and daily gain from birth to 100 kg (p<0.05). Thus, the single nucleotide deletion polymorphism in IFN-γ could be an important genetic marker for both immune response and growth traits and can be potentially used in pig breeding.

  Using CaMK2B gene cds of human and mouse to blast Sus scrofa 9 genome, the porcine CaMK2B gene sequence was obtained. Homologous protein sequence between four isoforms in 9 species was analyzed. The results indicate that some key residues differences are responsible for different enzymatic properties of different isoforms.

  The structure and function of Z-discs were related strongly to the normal physiological phenotype and function of skeletal muscle. The protein Myozenin (MYOZ), an α-actinin and γ-filamin-binding Z-disc globular protein expressed predominantly in skeletal muscle was possibly involved in the confirmation and function of Z-discs. Here we described MYOZ1 gene which has a significantly higher expression level in skeletal muscle than several other tissues in porcine. Furthermore, MYOZ1 transcripts in three porcine development stages (embryonic 33 days, embryonic 65 days and adult) of skeletal muscle shown stepwise increasingly expression pattern by using quantitative PCR analysis. Functional assays were conducted using C2C12 cells and the results implied MYOZ1 was not involved in both of cellular proliferation and differentiation.

  Microarray technology has been widely applied in the research area of animal genetics and breeding. In the earlier stage of microarray data analysis, the non-specific filtering is a common procedure which has been used increase the detection rate of differentially expressed genes. In this investigation, researchers use the data from Affymetrix GeneChip Porcine Genome Array to comparatively assess the effects of different non-specific filtering methods on the results of transcriptome analysis. The research results showed that the MAS5, ET and IQR filters could increase but the I/NI-calls method could decrease the number of differentially expressed genes. Here into, the IQR filter has the largest detection rate. Furthermore, the two-way combinations with IQR filter have the similar increasing effect on differentially expressed gene detection. It is concluded that not all non-specific filtering methods could increase the detection rate in microarray data analyses and the IQR filter could be considered as a preferred choice when improvement in the detection rate is needed on some occasions.
