  The two primary requirements for a Martian habitat structure include effective radiation shielding against the Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) environment and sufficient structural and thermal integrity. To significantly reduce the cost associated with transportation of such materials and structures from earth, it is imperative that such building materials should be synthesized primarily from Martian in situ resources. This paper illustrates the feasibility of such an approach. Experimental results are discussed to demonstrate the synthesis of polyethylene (PE) from a simulated Martian atmosphere and the fabrication of a composite material using simulated Martian regolith with PE as the binding material. The radiation shielding effectiveness of the proposed composites is analyzed using results from radiation transport codes and exposure of the samples to high-energy beams that serve as a terrestrial proxy for the GCR environment. Mechanical and ballistic impact resistance properties of the proposed composite as a function of composition, processing parameters, and thermal variations are also discussed to evaluate the multifunctionality of such in situ synthesized composite materials.

Development of minimally invasive biomarker assays for early detection and effective clinical management of pancreatic cancer is urgently needed to reduce high morbidity and mortality associated with this malignancy. We hypothesized that if aberrantly expressing microRNAs (miRNA) in pancreatic adenocarcinoma tissues are detected in blood plasma, then plasma profiling of these miRNAs might serve as a minimally invasive early detection biomarker assay for this malignancy. By using a modified protocol to isolate and quantify plasma miRNAs from heparin-treated blood, we show that miRNA profiling in plasma can differentiate pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients from healthy controls. We have profiled four miRNAs, miR-21, miR-210, miR-155, and miR-196a, all implicated in the development of pancreatic cancer with either proven or predicted target genes involved in critical cancer-associated cellular pathways. Of these, miR-155 has recently been identified as a candidate biomarker of early pancreatic neoplasia, whereas elevated expression of miR196a has been shown to parallel progression of disease. The results revealed a sensitivity of 64% and a specificity of 89% with the analyses of plasma levels for this panel of four miRNAs. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve were estimated at 0.82 and 0.78 without and with leave-one-out cross-validation scheme, respectively. These observations, although a "proof of principle" finding at this time, show the feasibility of developing plasma miRNA profiling as a sensitive and specific blood-based biomarker assay for pancreatic cancer that has the potential of translation to the clinic with additional improvements in the future.

This article examines the difference in approach of the different constituent elements of the overall umbrella of IP Rights jurisprudence, for issues like exhaustion of the IP creator's rights after the first sale of the IP has already taken place, while doing so the authors explore the difference of rights in the same doctrine under different jurisdictions like India and the USA.

Practical significance

The difference in position with respect to patents and copyrights on exhaustion has been amply highlighted. This article explores the fact that the USA extends the doctrine of copyright exhaustion and parallel importation to all kinds of ‘works’, whereas the applicability of the same is much restricted in India, is highlighted as one of the issues to be resolved to attain a state of harmony in applicability and enforceability between apparently similar laws. This article thus compares and contradicts the issue of copyright exhaustion in two very different jurisdiction.

  Recently, alkaline proteases are of great importance due to their several industrial (detergent, tanning, textile and dairy industries, organic synthesis, peptide synthesis) and environmental applications. The objective of this study was to purify and characterize a novel surfactant and organic solvent stable high-alkaline protease from a new Bacillus pseudofirmus SVB1 (Shampa Venkata Bacillus isolate 1). The potential of the culture broth of a newly isolated Bacillus pseudofirmus SVB1 have evaluated in hydrolyzing natural proteins viz., egg albumin, blood, poultry feather and goat skin hair. An unusually large (85 kDa) serine alkaline protease was purified from the cell supernatant. High stability of the alkaline protease was found in the presence of surfactants, oxidizing agents, heavy metal ions and particularly organic solvents. The maximum activity was observed at an optimal pH of 10.0 and temperature of 40°C. The results obtained in this research study inferred that the purified alkaline protease was a novel surfactant and organic solvent tolerant enzyme with potential applications for various industrial processes.
