  The present study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial potential of ethanolic, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Bacopa monnieri (L.). The antimicrobial activity of ethanolic, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate tested for the Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Diethyl ether extracts of Bacopa monnieri showed an antibacterial activity against gram positive and ethyl acetate extract was active against gram negative organism. The extract of diethyl ether having potent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at higher concentrations (300 μg mL-1). Ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri has more antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Diethyl ether extract and Ethyl acetate extract has slight antifungal activity but have broad spectrum of antibacterial effect against the entire tested organisms, whereas ethanolic extract showed marked inhibitory activity against fungal species. Aqueous extract of the different concentration showed no inhibitory effects on the tested microorganisms due to loss of some active compounds during extraction processes of the sample.

  The hepatoprotective activity of the marine algae Gracilaria corticata was investigated against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) induced hepatotoxicity. AFB1 (1 ppm) induced hepatic damage was studied by assessing parameters such as body weight gain, liver weight, total protein, albumin and enzyme markers viz., transaminases (SGOT and SGPT), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The effect of co-administration of aqueous extract of G. corticata on the above parameter was further investigated. Hepatic damage was evidenced by significant (p<0.05) decreased level of body weight gain, liver weight, total protein and albumin. Co administration of rats with the aqueous extract of G. corticata showed a tendency to attain near normalcy. Elevated levels of total bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, LDH and ALP in aflatoxin B1 intoxicated rats were restored to normal level in the rats treated with aqueous extract (250 mg kg-1 body weight) and aflatoxin B1. Thus the study substantiates the hepatoprotective potential of aqueous extract of G. corticata.

  Totally 156 species of marine phytoplankton were identified of which Diatoms formed the dominant group followed by Dinoflagellates, Blue Green and Greens. Phytoplankton population density and species diversity were high during the summer season and were invariably sparse during the monsoon season at both the stations. Species richness and evenness of phytoplankton showed an inverse relationship with the dominance index. Distribution of chlorophyll a concentration closely followed the phytoplankton population density and gross primary productivity. Species composition, population density, primary productivity and chlorophyll a concentration was more in the coast due to higher number of autochthonous coastal marine species in addition to allochthonous species from the estuary.

  The present study was carried out to investigate the hydrographical parameters, nutrients, total coliforms and total heterotrophic bacteria populations in water and sediment samples of Mullipallam creek in Muthupettai mangroves. The range of hydrographical parameters in water samples viz., atmospheric temperature (28.5-32.2°C), surface water temperature (28.2-31.7°C), salinity (31-34‰), pH (8.0-8.3) and dissolved oxygen (2.95-3.52 mg-1) and in nutrients, inorganic phosphate (0.322-0.810 μmol-1), total phosphorus (1.312-3.239 μmol-1), nitrite (0.858 to 1.384 μmol-1), nitrate (1.937-5.133 μmol-1), silicate (16.272-21.237 μmol-1), ammonia (0.068-0.191 μmol-1) and total nitrogen (23.921-26.919 μmol-1) in water samples. The level of nutrients in the sediment samples, total nitrogen was varied from 3.70 to 8.96 μg-g, total phosphorus was ranged from 0.947 to 2.872 μg-g and total organic carbon was varied between 3.721 and 6.576 mg-g. The microbial population of present investigation was revealed that a total of nine bacterial coliforms were recorded, which includes of seven gram-negative forms such as Vibrio cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, Escherichia coil, Klebsiella pneumonae, Shigella dysenteri, Streptococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The total of seven heterotrophic bacterial populations were recorded of which Vibrio sp. and Escherichia coli were from to be the dominant species followed by Shigella sp., Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Salmonella sp. and Streptococcus sp.
