  A field experiment was conducted during kharif season 2011-2012 at the Vegetable Research Farm, Department of Vegetable Science, College of Forestry and Hill Agriculture, Hill Campus Ranichauri, Distt. Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications and fourteen treatments (each hybrid representing one treatment). Tomato is considered as important and economic agricultural crop all over the world. For improving the yield and yield attributes, hybrids are often produced and evaluated under different growing conditions. In the study, presented morphological (growth and yield parameters) and biochemical properties of fourteen fresh tomato hybrids were evaluated inside playhouse under mid hill condition of Uttarakhand. The experiment results revealed that hybrid Himraja performed extremely well under polyhouse condition with respect to growth, yield and quality parameters viz., number of flower cluster per plant (8.33), plant height (315.00 cm), fruit set percentage (84.09%), maximum marketable fruit yield per hectare (1046.80 q) and high TSS (7.98°Brix) when compared to all other hybrids. Besides, this hybrid also proved the best with respect to disease resistance and profitability.

  Phytotoxic effects of aqueous extracts of walnut leaf were studied on germinating seeds and early seedling growth of mustard (Brassica campestris cv. Karanti) under western Himalayan agri-silvi system. Five treatments comprised of distilled water (control), 40, 60, 80 and 100% concentration of leaf extracts were treated. The effect of aqueous extracts was found inhibitive with concentration dependent manner on seed germination and subsequent seedling growth. The variety exhibited extent of phytotoxicity at 100% extracts application in comparison to untreated control. Invariably there was a decrease in first count, germination, seedling root and shoot length, seedling fresh and dry weight with increasing aqueous extracts concentration on germinating mustard. Present investigation shows that the tree species have allelopathic potential and contain water-soluble substances. They have inhibitory effects at higher concentrations but at low concentrations they have stimulatory effects. Seed germination, seedling elongation and weights were determined on date of final count, however, other seedling vigor i.e., vigor index, speed of germination index, Relative Growth Index (RGI), Mean Daily Germination (MDG), Mean Germination Time (MGT) and time to 50% germination (T50) were calculated as per their respective formula. The significant reduction in seed germination and seedling vigor were observed of walnut leaf extracts on mustard (Brassica campestris). It was found that seed germination and seedling vigor of mustard were affected negatively by walnut leaf extracts in concentration dependent manner.

  A laboratory experiment was conducted to observe the effect of Juglans regia L. leaf extracts on germination and subsequent seedling growth of wheat (cv. VL-907) and barley (cv. PRB-502) under West Himalayan agri-silvi system. Eleven treatments comprised of distilled water 0 (Control), 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100% concentration of leaf extracts were employed. The effect of aqueous extracts was found inhibitive indicating a direct proportional relationship with concentration dependent manner on seed germination and subsequent seedling growth of wheat. Invariably, there was a decrease in root, shoot as well as seedling length, fresh and dry weight of seedling and vigour index I and II with increasing walnut leaf extracts concentration on wheat. However, barley seed showed a considerable resistance against walnut leaf extract and no significant reduction and trend was observed for seed germination and subsequent seedling growth i.e., fresh and dry weight, vigour index I and II for different concentration of leaf extracts.

  Seeds of three accessions of Dracocephalum heterophyllum growing wild in high altitude locations in the cold desert regions of trans-Himalaya were collected and propagated under polyhouse conditions at IHBT Palampur to evaluate, compare their growth performance and essential oil composition. Three different chemotypes viz., citronellol-rose oxides type, citronellol type and citronellal-trans rose oxide type were identified. Samples of essential oils were distilled separately from leaves and inflorescence of all the three cultivated accessions and characterised by capillary GC and GC-MS techniques, which showed variation in the volatile constituents. In all the three accessions, citronellol was higher in the inflorescence oils as compared to leaf oils. Rose oxides, which are important high odour value cyclic monoterpene ethers were found in the essential oil samples of leaves as well as in the inflorescence of accession II, whereas these constituents were absent in the leaves of other two accessions. The essential oil from the inflorescence part of accession I was devoid of both cis and trans isomers of rose oxide, while accession III contained only one isomer of trans rose oxide. Under polyhouse conditions, seed germination was higher in accession III, whereas aerial biomass was higher in accession I. In comparison to other accessions, yield of volatile oil was higher in both leaf and inflorescence of accessions I, whereas accession II had higher oil yield from inflorescence. This is the first report of volatile oil composition of three accessions of D. heterophyllum cultivated at Palampur having potential as a new source of high valued essential oil for introduction in the perfumery industry.
