  Two lipases designated as Lip-1 and Lip-2 were purified from dorsal part of grey mullet (Liza parsia) to homogeneity by 85% (NH4)2SO4 fractionation followed by simultaneous desalting and concentration by ultrafiltration and Sephadex G-50 and DEAE-cellulose chromotography and CM-cellulose chromotography. The molecular weight of two lipases was determined by SDS-PAGE and gel filtration about 46.5 and 41.2 KDa, respectively. Both the enzymes were dimer in nature remained unchanged the presence and absence of reducing agent under SDA-PAGE. The Lip-1 and Lip-2 lipases were active within the pH range of 7-8.5, with an optimum pH of 8 and 8.5.0 and were stable from 2.0-10.5. The enzyme was active within the temperature range of 30-60°C and maximum activities were observed around 33 and 35°C, respectively and beyond which it lost activity progressively. The hydrolytic activity was enhanced by Ca+ and EDTA (concentration 0.001-0.003 M) but strongly inhibited by heavy metal s Cd++, Zn++ and Hg++. The presence of Zn++ and Hg++ potently inhibited lipolytic activities of the lipases from grey mullet, while activities were slightly inhibited in the presence of Cu++ salts.

  The experiment was performed in the experimental land of the Institute of Biological Sciences, Rajshahi during the period of April-May, 2007 and 2008. The physical and chemical characteristics of jute fibre under different foliar treatments were investigated at mature stage. The results showed significantly increase in most of the chemical composition under different foliar treatments. Moisture content, dry matter and ash contents of jute fibre obtained from experimental land compared to those of control jute fibre after application of NPK-fertilizers and cowdung in combination with foliar spray. The moister content of jute fibre decreased whereas ash content increased significantly under different treatments. The moisture and ash contents of jute fibre were varied between 12 to 14% and 0.5 to 0.7%, respectively. On the other hand the dry matter content of jute fibre increased slightly under different treatments. The aqueous extract, fatty and waxy matter, pectic matter, α-cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin contents and tensile strength of jute fibre as compared to those of control were as follows: The maximum increase of aqueous extract 20.65% (treatment T2), the maximum increase of fatty and waxy 22.54% (treatment T2), pectic matter 5.49% (treatment T6), α-cellulose 61%, hemicellulose 29%, lignin contents 7.29% (treatment T6) and tensile strength 15.55%.

  Among the marine toxins related to human intoxication, tetrodotoxin has been known as one of the most prejudicial. Two tetrodotoxins, namely PFT-1 and PFT-2 were isolated and purified from liver of puffer fish by thin layer chromatography. The structure of both the toxins was elucidated by means of IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR and mass spectroscopy. Sub acute toxicity study showed that both the toxins had pronounced effects on total RBC, WBC, platelet and ESR. Further serum levels of SGPT, SGOT, SALP, bilirubin, creatinine and urea are also affected by the toxins. The histopathological examinations showed that all the tissues such as liver, lung, heart and kidney of rat were severely changed after treatment with the toxins. The toxicity of the purified compounds, PFT-1 and PFT-2 were also performed by brine shrimp lethality bioassay.

  The nutritional composition such as moisture, ash, lipid protein, carbohydrate, total chlorophyll, crude fibre, phenol, β-carotene, vitamin-B1, vitamin-B2, vitamin-C, Calcium, phosphorus and iron content of four varieties of healthy and Phyllectinia corylea infected mulberry leaves at mature stage has been analyzed. The mulberry leaves are considered as a good sources of starch, protein, crude fibre, minerals, vitamin-C, β-carotene and were estimated about 6-7, 4.0-4.6, .0, .0-3.5, 15-132, 00-120 mg%, respectively. Moisture, ash, lipid, crude fibre, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals content were decreased significantly but protein and phenol content were increased after infected of mulberry leaves with fungus, Phyllectinia corylea.

  Polyphenoloxidase (PPO), an important oxidative enzyme which played a vital role in the brewing of guava after infection with fruit-rot disease was purified from disease-affected guava. The method was accomplished by ion exchange chromatography of crude enzyme extract on DEAE-cellulose followed by CM-cellulose. The purified enzyme was found to be homogeneous as judged by polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis. Molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be 178 kDa and 180.5 kDa by gel filtration and SDS-PAGE respectively. The enzyme appeared to be a single polypeptide chain as revealed by SDS-PAGE either in presence or in absence of reducing agent. Optimum activity of the enzyme was at 48°C and pH around 8. Activity was destroyed completely in presence of EDTA, a metal chellator. Purified PPO showed an estimated km value of 4.4 mM for catechol as substrate.
