  The increasing importation of starch in Malaysia for poultry and bio-processing industries is a call for concern. The development and released of improved cassava genotype (Sri Pontian) in 2003 by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development (MARDI) was a good step to enhance cassava productivity. Sri Pontian was reported to show higher yield than those of Manihot Mardi 92 and Sri Medan (the popular table variety). Such claim has not been verify in East Malaysia. This research was carried out to verify the aforementioned claim by comparing selected yields attributes of Manihot Mardi 92, Sri Medan and Sri Pontian at Bintulu, Sarawak, East Malaysia. This study was conducted at experimental field of University Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus Sarawak from July to December, 2011. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. The three varieties evaluated were: Manihot Mardi 92, Sri Medanand Sri Pontian. These varieties were planted on ridges with three planting methods: Vertical planting (forming 90° angle to the ridges), incline planting (forming 45-60° angle to the ridges) and horizontal planting (forming 180° to the ridges). Variations among the varieties were observed for number of shoots retained per plant, leaf longevity, leaf area index, number of storage roots formation and fresh storage roots yield. Significant interaction effect between variety and planting method was observed for all the variables tested, except for number of shoots retained per plant and number of storage roots per plant. All varieties showed similar number of shoots per plant regardless of planting method except for Sri Pontian which had lowest effect with respect to number of storage roots formation per plant in incline planting. Similarly, leaf longevity in Sri Pontian was the lowest regardless of planting method. Sri Medan showed the greatest leaf area index, number of storage roots formation per plantand fresh storage roots yield. The effect of Manihot Mardi 92 in terms of leaf area index, number of storage roots formation per plantand total storage roots yield in vertical planting was comparable to that of Sri Medan. Sri Pontian had the lowest storage roots yield. This study showed in East Malaysia, Sri Medan was identified as the best genotype with good agronomic attributes. This variety has the potential to increase cassava productivity over a wide range of environmental conditions.

  Maize is one of the most important and oldest cultivated cereals. However a wide range of insect pests attack maize both in the field and storage. Lime was collected from Dora farm House, Kaduna State and was identified in the Herbarium of Department of Pharmacognocy, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The unripe, peeled and dried lime was grounded into powder using pestle and mortar. The oil was extracted by soxhlet extraction method. Sitophilus zeamaise was obtained from naturally infested maize grains obtained from Rimi market, Kano State. The insect was identified based on morphological appearance. The Maize used for bioassay was disinfested in a deep freezer for 96 h and later air-dried in the laboratory under the ambient conditions (32±0.64°C and 68±3% RH) and the moisture content was determined. Twenty five gram of the sample was weighed into separate containers. Four concentrations of the oil (1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mL) were inoculated separately into these containers. These concentrations correspond to (6.0, 8.0, 10.0 and 12.0% v/w). Five insects (day old) were separately inoculated into these containers and covered with muslin cloth. Each treatment was replicated, arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The result indicated that the mortality of the insect was dose dependant where the higher concentration used recorded the highest mortality (100%) after 72 h of treatment which is significantly higher (p<0.005) than untreated control (0%). Lime peel oil is effective in the protection of maize against weevil Sitophilus zeamaise.

  The efficacy of Vittallaria paradoxa seed oil against Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) on cowpea treated seed was evaluated under ambient conditions (32±0.64°C and 68±3% R.H) at the Biological Sciences Department of Bayero University Kano. Callasobruchus maculatus were obtained from IITA Store in Kano State of Nigeria. The insect were reared and bred in the laboratory. The cowpea seed used for the bioassay were kept in the freezer overnight to eliminate maculatus infestation coming from field and the Moisture content was determined. The oil was extracted locally by steaming of dry seeds of Vittallaria paradoxa in a large cooking pot after pounding into paste in a mortar. Four different concentrations of seed oil (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mL) were separately mixed with 20 g of cowpea in separate petri dishes which correspond to (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0% v/w), respectively. Ten pairs of one-day old Callasobruchus maculatus were introduced into each petri dish. Number of eggs laid, viability of the eggs and adult emergence from each treatment were compared with the control and were found to be significantly reduced in comparison with the control treatment. It is concluded that Vittallaria paradoxa has great potential for use as a plant-based biopesticide for controlling pulse beetle Callasobruchus maculatus.
