  The Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) is well known for richness and diversity of valuable but highly sensitive species of medicinal and aromatic plants. Among medicinal plants of the region, genus Berberis has gained an important place in different systems of medicine. Every parts of the species used in medicinal purpose. This genus represents richness of species across Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) with wide ranging distribution from low lying sub-tropical to High alpine areas. The roots stem bark and fruits of various Berberis species in the region are well recognized for their alkaloid contents. In recent years, the global demand for these alkaloids and their derivatives has grown substantially. Its medicinal uses are reported Indian pharmaceutical codex and in different traditional medicines various Analytical tools such as High performance liquid chromatography, Gas chromatography, Gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy infrared spectroscopy progress in natural product chemistry have always liked with innovation in analytical technology. Among the chromatographic techniques High performance thin layer liquids chromatography more popular in quality control and standardization of traditional herbs like Berberis keeping in view of this goal of the present study to develop chromatography fingerprinting of three high value Himalyan Berberis species plant parts. The berberine content in root and stem bark of three Berberis (i.e., B. asiatica, B. aristata, B. lycium) was estimated using a simple High Performance Thin Layer Liquid Chromatography (HPTLC). The comparative methods assessment revealed that the berberine content varied both in root and stem bark samples. More berberine content observed in root samples as compared to bark of all the investigated species. Among the species Berberis asiatica contain more berberine significantly (p<0.05) as compared to B. lycicum and B. aristata.

  The present study deals with the assessment of hair growth potential of three plants, Semecarpus anacardium, Trigonella foenumgraecum and Trigonella corniculata. Petroleum ether and ethanolic extracts of all the plants were prepared. Aloe vera gel (prepared with fresh Aloe vera leaves) based herbal formulations were prepared with both types of extracts of each plant. The formulations were subjected to characterization of pH, texture, odour and toxicity studies. Hair growth activity of the formulations was studied in comparison of 2% minoxidil solution (standard) in albino rats for 30 days. It was concluded that T. foenumgraecum showed the best hair growth activity. Formulation containing T. foenumgraecum petroleum ether extract showed the minimum time to initiate (5 days) as well as to complete the hair growth (18 days) at denuded surfaces. Formulation with T. foenumgraecum ethanolic extract showed the best hair lengthening properties as compared to others. The study concluded that even the short-term treatment with these herbal formulations is effective in significant hair growth promotion.

  Micro and macro elements such as Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Co, Na, K, Ca and Li were detected from Rheum moorcroftianum Royle, a plant used in folk medicines. Altitudinal and seasonal variation of these trace elements in cultivated and wild roots and leaves of R. moorcroftianum were quantified by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The highest concentrations of Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Co, Na, K, Ca and Li were found to be 376.0 ± 0.9, 83.0 ± 4.6, 322.0 ± 6.0, 920.0 ± 1.9, 72.0 ± 1.5, 402.0 ± 7.8, 10,235.0 ± 7.0, 12,336.0 ± 2.6 and 59.9 ± 0.3  mg kg−1, respectively, in all the samples analysed.

  In the recent years, vibration spectroscopes (infrared spectroscopy) have been developed for all sorts of analysis in life and chemical science. Important features of these methods are the relative ease with which measurements can be performed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) is a technique that has been used over the years in chemical analysis for the identification of substances and is one that may be applied to the characterization of biomolecules. Infrared spectroscopy is based on the measurement of the molecular bond vibration compounds, excited by radiation of a suitable frequency, when given the conditions for energy absorption by the molecules. Here, we review the potential application of vibrational spectroscopies for use in natural product. It can be concluded that vibrational spectroscopy show high potential as novel methods.
