  Background and Objective: Seed germination is the first step for the development of plant growth where some factor acts as a catalyst in this case. The study was conducted to assess the impact of different pre-sowing seed treatments on germination and seedling growth attributes of Tamarindus indica in the nursery. Materials and Methods: Performed treatments were control (T1), socking seed in hot water treatment 100°C for 5 (T2) and 10 min (T3), soaking seeds in cold water for 48 h (T4), soaking seeds in farm yard manure for 48 h (T5), soaking seeds in concentrated H2SO4 for 3 min (T6) and cracking of seeds (T7). Results: The study revealed highest (84%) seed germination of T. indica was observed in socking seeds in conc. H2SO4 for 3 min. Maximum germination value (12.42), germination uniformity (7.64), germination index (7.05), mean germination time (26) was obtained in T5 whereas highest germination energy (74.44) recorded in T7. Seed germination began within 5 days and proceeded on normal 51 days. Shoot length, root length, collar diameter, leaf number, partial root number recorded maximum in T5 followed by T6. Similar trend of results were also observed in shoot, root, dry biomass production, vigor index, volume index and quality index. Conclusion: Therefore, the study recommended conc. H2SO4 treatment for 3 min for seed germination for experimental purposes only (considering the handling risk of that acid) while socking seeds with farm yard manure for 48 h can be used for large scale and quality seedling production in the nursery.

  Non-conventional seafood products, fish sausage and fish ball were developed from underutilized sea catfish and consumer’s acceptance and market test of the new products were conducted in inland rural and coastal fishing communities. Sea catfish, achysurus thalassinus was collected from Chittagong in an insulated box. The cost of production and profit of the products were assessed in the laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. From a 1000 g catfish, 500 g washed mince could be recovered. From 500 g washed mince, a total of 1000 g dough could be produced and from this dough 17 pieces of fish sausage and 40 pieces of fish ball were produced. The total production cost of the products from 1000 g dough including raw materials, ingredients, wage, transportation, storage and marketing was Tk. 75. Pilot market-testing were done in 10 villages of Mymensingh and six coastal villages of Chittagong. Finally, an analysis of the cost and profit of production was done on the basis of the price of product set by the people, the price of raw material in the market, tentative cost of productions and cost of transportation and storage. As per the average selling price obtained from the market tests, products of 1000 g can be sold at Tk. 136/- for sausage (Tk. 8/- each) and Tk. 160/- for fish ball (Tk. 4/- each) in the rural market of Bangladesh. Therefore, a net profit of Tk. 61 from fish sausage and Tk.85 from fish ball could be realized, from a manufacture of 1000 g whole sea catfish. Consumer’s acceptance and market tests revealed that fish ball was best chosen between the two products.

  Essential and trace elementals in some fruits and vegetables of southwestern Bangladesh have been measured using particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique. The selected fruits and vegetables for study are usually consumed by all income groups of rural and city population. The samples were dried, pressed to make pellet and then bombarded with accelerated protons at 3.0 MV Tandem Accelerator facility of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. The X-rays emitted in the irradiation were measured by HPGe-detector. The X-ray spectrum was analyzed using GUPIX software. A number of major and trace elements were found to be in varying concentrations in the investigated fruits and vegetables. The contents of K and Ca being notably large in some samples. No toxic elements were detected in the investigated samples.
