  Twenty-four Najdi ram lambs, weighing an average of 24 kg and circa 3 months old were utilized in this trial to evaluate the effect of two feeding frequencies on growth performance, carcass characteristics, digestion coefficients, nitrogen retention and ruminal VFA and ammonia-N concentrations. The feeding protocol involved once daily feeding at 0800 h and twice daily feeding in two equal portions at 08:00 and 15:00 h lambs were offered a sufficient quantity of total daily DM (95 g DM day-1 w0.75) to resemble ad libitum consumption. All lambs were slaughtered after a 14 week feeding trial. Although, the results showed no significant effect of frequency of feeding on DMI, ADG, carcass weight, digestibility of DM, CP and ADF and N-retention, lambs fed one meal daily had higher (p<0.05) gain efficiency and NDF digestibility and lower (p<0.05) dressing percentage than lambs fed two meals daily. Rumen total VFA concentrations at all post-feeding intervals were not influenced (p>0.05) by feeding frequency, except at 10 h post-feeding; rumen VFA concentration value at 10 h post-feeding was higher (p<0.05) in lambs fed once daily than those fed twice daily. Feeding once daily resulted in a greater (p<0.05) molar proportion of propionate and a smaller (p<0.05) molar proportion of acetate than from feeding twice daily. The ruminal fluctuations in total VFA and ammonia-N concentrations were less obvious in the lambs fed twice daily than once daily.

  The present investigation was carried out to examine the presence of Booroola FecB mutation gene in 124 selected prolific ewes from 6 flocks representing two Saudi Arabian local sheep breeds by forced PCR-RFLP method. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood of 69 Najdi and 55 Naeimi matured ewes with litter size varied from 2.01-2.16 lambs per ewe lambing. Digestion of FecB gene 190 base pair with AvaII restriction enzyme resulted in non carrier 190 bp band wild type in all samples which revealed the absence of this mutation in the tested Najdi and Naeimi sheep breeds.

  An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of castration on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of Ardhi goat kids. Twenty-four weaner male kids with an average age of 3 months and 14.1±0.91 kg body weight were assigned randomly to one of two equal groups and the kids in one group were castratoed using elastrator rings while the other group was left intact. All kids were fed ad libitum on high energy commercial pellets for 82 days and slaughtered. Castration had no significant effect on slaughter weight, feed intake, gain, feed: gain ratio, carcass weight and dressing percentage. Castrated goat kids had significantly (p<0.05) heavier liver weight, more body fat thickness and lighter head weight than comparable intact. There were no differences (p>0.05) between castrated and intact kids on all studied internal fat depot weights, chemical composition of the 9-11th rib joint and meat quality of the longissimus muscle except for the separable fat percentage from 9-11th rib joint which was higher (p<0.05) for castrated as compared to intact kids.

  The effects of Delaying access to Feed and water (DF) after hatch and glucose supplementation of drinking water on the performance of broiler chickens were investigated in 2 trials. DF for up to 48 h immediately after hatch depressed performance, weight of bursa of fabricius and heart and small intestine length and thickness. However, the DF period did not influence mortality percentage, feed efficiency, composition of eviscerated carcass and body weight percentage of small intestine, heart and lymphoid organs of chickens at 33 days of age when compared with birds fed immediately after hatch. Access to feed and water after hatch increased body weight gain, feed intake and eviscerated carcass weight over the 33 days experimental period. The addition of glucose for up to 10% to drinking water of DF birds in the 1st 72 h did not influence the performance and eviscerated carcass of DF birds.

  An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of replacing corn with extruded Bakery Waste (BWP) in the diet of laying hens on the performance (feed intake, egg production, egg weight, egg mass and feed efficiency) and egg components (albumen, yolk and eggshell) and characteristics of eggshell (thickness and strength) and albumen (height and Haugh unit) and yolk (height and color (YH and YC)) and feed costs of egg production. Six isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets were formulated using 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of BWP. The level of corn in the basal diet (0% BWP) was 60.16%. The replacement of corn for up to 100% with BWP reduced feed costs with no impairment on the performance, egg components, characteristics of eggshell and albumen and YH. Replacing dietary ≥40% of corn with BWP reduced YC. It is concluded that BWP can completely replace corn in laying hen diets without affecting the performance, egg components, egg characteristics of albumen and eggshell and YH. Yolk pigment should be added to the diet to improve YC when ≥40% of corn replaced with BWP.

  The effects of in ovo feeding of L-Glutamine (GLN) at 17th day of incubation on hatchability traits, hatching time and chick weight at hatch (CWT and CWT%, expressed as an absolute value and as a percentage of egg weight, respectively) of Ross meat-type breeder eggs were studied at 26 and 32 weeks of age in trials 1 and 2, respectively. The treatments were a non-injected control, a positive control where saline was injected or saline with GLN at 5, 7.5 and 10 mg/egg. In ovo feeding of GLN did not influence hatchability traits, CWT, CWT% and hatching time. In ovo feeding of 10 mg GLN/egg increased percentage of hatched chicks at 468 h of incubation and reduced percentage of hatched chicks at 492 h of incubation when compared with those of the control treatments. Age of birds did not influence hatchability traits and percentages of hatched chicks at 468 and 492 h of incubation and CWT%. Eggs produced at 26 weeks of age had lower weight, percentage of hatched chicks at 504 h of incubation, hatching time and CWT when compared with those produced at older age. It is concluded that in ovo of up to 10 mg GLN/egg at 17th day of incubation of layer-type breeder eggs did not influence hatchability traits, chick weight at hatch and hatching time and eggs produced at older age had higher egg weight, chick weight at hatch and hatched later than those produced at younger age.

  This study aims to investigate the effect of carrying one copy of the FecB allele on body weight of Naeimi and Naeimi crossbred lambs at birth, weaning, 75 and 100 days of age. A total of 107 lambs representing 24 purebred Naeimi (NN) and 83 Naeimi-Booroola carrier crossbred (NB) were examined. The results showed that 43 lambs out of the 83 NB lambs were heterozygous carrier of the FecB allele whereas the other NB lambs were homozygous non-carrier of the wild allele. The frequency of the B+ genotype was 0.52 among all born NB lambs. The results also revealed that mean body weights of NN lambs were heavier (p<0.05) than that of NB lambs at all studied ages. Body weights of NB++ were heavier (p<0.05) than NBB+ lambs at birth, weaning and 75 days of age, the differences in weight between NB++ and NBB+ at 100 days of age was not significant (p>0.05). The influence of type of birth on live body weight at birth and weaning age was significant (p<0.05) but these differences between single and twin born lambs and between twin and triplet born lambs disappeared (p>0.05) at 75 and 100 days of age. No differences (p>0.05) were noted in birth and weaning weights of male and female lambs, however, the male lambs being 7.2% heavier (p<0.05) than the female lambs at 75 and 100 days of age.
