  Genetic divergence of 35 sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) genotypes was estimated using D2 and principal component analysis for nine characters. The genotypes under study were grouped into 4 clusters. The cluster I contained the maximum number of genotype and the cluster III contained the minimum. The inter cluster distance in most of the cases were higher than the intra cluster distance indicating wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. The highest inter cluster distance between cluster III and IV followed by between III and V showing wide diversity among the groups.. The highest intra-cluster distance was observed in cluster IV and lowest in cluster II. Days to maturity, number of tiller/plant and 1000 grain weight showed maximum contribution towards total divergence among the genotypes.

  An investigation was conducted to evaluate the surface water quality at Matrianga Upazilla under very remote areas of Khagrachrari Hill District of Bangladesh. The chemical analyses of water collected from canals included pH, EC, total cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, As, P and B), Total anions (CO3 , HCO3 , SO4 , NO3 , C1), TDS, SAR, SSP, RSC and hardness (HT ). pH values (6.75-7.27) indicated that the waters were slightly T acidic to neutral. waters contained Ca, Mg, Na, K, HOC3 and C1 predominantly along with Zn, P and B in lesser amounts. Mn, Cu and As were found trace to very little amount. Fe and SO4 were found trace. TDS and SAR values indicated that all waters were 4 under ‘good’ and ‘permissible’ classes. SAR and EC categorized the waters as C1-S1. All waters were found under ‘soft’ class regarding hardness with ‘suitable’ RSC. Based on As, Fe, Mn, Zn, SO4 , NO3 and C1 all waters were within the ´safe’ limit for drinking except one sample for As.

  An attempt was made to isolate and study the resistance of bacterial pathogens from clinical specimens (stool, blood and skin lesion) of hospitalized patients against three antibiotics viz., erythromycin, tetracycline and penicillin G. Seven different strains of pathogenic bacteria viz., Salmonella typhi, S. paratyphi, A. shigella dysenteriae, S. sonnei, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes and Escherichia coli were isolated. All the isolates were found resistance to penicillin G and tetracycline except S. typhi and S. sonnei which were found sensitive to tetracycline. On the other hand, all the isolates were found to be sensitive against erythromycin tested herein and the highest zone of inhibition (26 mm) was recorded against S. typhi. Subsequent agarose gel electrophoresis showed no plasmid-DNA band in the gel indicating that observed resistance was chromosomal gene-mediated.

  A study was conducted to evaluate the groundwater quality at Phulpur thane of Mymensingh district in Bangladesh. Water samples from 14 deep tubewells were analyzed for pH, EC, TDS, Na+, K+, Ca++, Mg++, Fe, P, B, NO3-N, SO4–, Cl–, CO3– and HCO3–. In addition SAR, SSP and RSC were calculated following standard equations. The range of EC was 180-380 μScm–1 and SAR 0.22-0.80 and these two parameters indicated that three samples were in 'low salinity-low alkali' and 11 were in 'medium salinity-low alkali' hazard class. There was no chloride toxicity in the area. The presence of SO4–, NO3– and P were negligible. As regards boron and SSP, all waters were of 'good' to 'excellent' class. In respect of TDS all were 'fresh water'. On the basis of RSC values all samples were of 'suitable' class. As a whole, groundwater of the area can safely be used for long-term irrigation. But some of those may not be suitable for drinking and industrial uses in consideration of Fe concentration, TDS and pH values. Among the quality determining factors SSP and SAR were highly correlated where correlation coefficient was 0.97.

  An experiment was conducted during 1998-99 to study the effect of different spacing (50 cm x 20 cm, 50 x 30 cm and 50 x 40 cm) and K2O rate (0, 40, 75, 120 and 150 Kg ha–1) on the growth, dry matter, production and yield of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). Close spacing produced the tallest plants (87.89 cm), medium spacing produced the plants (87.89 cm), medium spacing produced the plants with the highest finger breadth (6.95 cm) and primary finger per plant (2.71) while wide spacing produced with the highest number of tillers per hill (3.42), leaves per plant (8.56), total dry weight per plant (53.79 g) and highest yield per plant (189.35 g). But total yield (t ha–1) was highest with close spacing. Almost all of the characters studied showed increasing trend with increasing rate of potassium and the highest yield (15.4 t ha–1) was obtained with 120 Kg ha–1 K2O. The interaction effect of spacing and potassium exhibited insignificant variation in most of the characters.
