  The new ligand, 2-bromo-N, N-Dimethylbenzylamine has been prepared according to scheme 1. The synthesized ligand was further reacted with Mo(CO)6 and W(CO)6 to yield 2-bromo N, N-Dimethylbenzylamine- Mo(CO)5 and 2-bromo N, N-Dimethylbenzylamine-W(CO)5 complexes, respectively. Both the ligand and its complexes were characterized on the basis of physical properties, elemental analysis data, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It was found that the ligand has monodentate nature and coordinates with metal through its nitrogen atom thus replacing one CO molecule to maintain the charge density on metal centre.

  Olive (Olea europaea L.) cuttings taken from different varieties, were studied at the Agricultural Research Institute, Tarnab, Peshawar in February 2000.The cuttings were struck in 3000-ppm solution of IBA for 5 minutes before planting on beds prepared from sand, silt and FYM and then were covered with transparent plastic sheets for arresting proper humidity. Varieties Azarbaijan and Earleeg showed significantly maximum number of leaves per cutting (65.88 and 64.55 respectively) and shoot length (18.21 and 17.88 cm respectively). Variety Azarbaijan gave significantly higher sprouting percentage (48.66%) and the number of shoots per cutting (4.88) followed by variety Earleeg with 35.55% sprouting and 3088 number of leaves per cutting. The shoot diameters were not significantly different in either variety. It can be concluded from the results that variety Azarbaijan gave the best performance followed by Earleeg in the agro-climatic conditions of Peshawar as regards the cutting performance is concerned.

  Proximate chemical composition, mineral constituents and antibacterial activity of Suaeda fruticosa (Kali Lani) was carried out. Determination of chemical constituents showed the presence of total carbohydrates 0.66 per cent (0.34% reducing and 0.32 % non-reducing), moisture contents 87.9 per cent and ash contents 6.0 per cent. Ether extract of the plant showed acid value 0.56, iodine value 0.02, refractive index 1.36 and pH value 8.0. The percentage of mineral constituents was, sodium 1.40, potassium 0.55, calcium 2.40, magnesium 2.04, carbonates 0.12, bicarbonates 0.85 and chlorides 1.40. Results of antibacterial activity of plant extracts in water, acetone, ethanol and ether against Klebsiella, Staphylococcus and E.Coli indicated that plant possesses potent antibacterial activity. E.Coli showed resistance to the standard antibiotic I. e. Streptomycin while its growth was inhibited by acetone and ether extracts.

  In the study of insect pests of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill,) in Peshawar, the insects found or feeding on soybean plants were white fly Bemisia tabaci (Gen), Thrips flavus Schr, jassids Amrasca biguttula (Gen)., painted bug Piezodorus sp., hairy catterpiller Euproctus sp., chrysomellids Systena sp. and different species of grasshoppers including Acrida exalta Walk., Truxalix nasuta (Lin.), Euprepocnemis alacris alacris (Ser.) and Attractomorpha acutipennis (Guer). Also the relative abundance of each of these species on different cultivars of soybean was recorded from August to November. Cultivar GS-50277-266-9-21 attracted significantly large number of all the recorded insects showing its least resistance or maximum susceptibility. Not a single cultivar was fount to be resistant to all the insect pests. However, cultivar WILL was relatively more resistant to white files, cultivar GC-81090-72-7 was relatively more resistant to painted bug and hairy caterpillar and cultivar GC-81083-83 was relatively more resistant to jassids and thrips than the other cultivars.

  The present investigation deals with the effect of vegetative inoculum on submerged citric acid fermentation by Aspergillus niger using stirred bioreactor. All fermentations were carried out following growth on 15% raw molasses sugars for 144 h. Ferrocyanide (200 ppm) was used to control the trace metals present in the molasses medium. The maximum production of citric acid was obtained when 1.0% vegetative inoculum was used. The dry cell mass and sugar consumption were 18.5 and 96.55 g l-1, respectively. The mycelia were intermediate round pellets in their morphology. The specific productivity (qp = 0.074±0.02a g g-1 cells h-1) was several folds higher than many other workers.

  Shoot apices of Masoor-85 seedlings (3-4 days old) induced proliferated callus masses under dark conditions, were induced to proliferate callus masses. The callus was induced under dark conditions in MS medium containing K (10 mg/l), GA (1 mg/l) with 5-10 percent lentil seed extract. The shoots were regenerated by transferring the callus culture in light. The shoots were cut and rooted to have plantlets that were finally grown in the field in winter season. These plants were Ro generation. The first selections were made from Ro and seeds were collected. These seeds were grown for R1 generation, whose seeds were selected for R2 generation and so on. Some selected variants were stable till AS generation and were called somaclonal. Variants for more pods and large seed were selected.

  Different irrigation levels had significant effect on plant height, number of fruit-bearing branches per plant, number of grains per plant, 1000-grain weight, total plant biomass, grain yield and harvest index. Cultivar NM-92 gave significantly higher grain yield (1059 kg per ha.) and harvest index (21.42%) than NM-54 which gave grain yield and harvest index values of 992.3 kg per ha. And 20.27% respectively. Crop grown with three irrigations (I3) gave significant higher grain yield of 1248.8 kg per ha. Compared to the grain yield of 785.8 kg per ha. Obtained from the crop grown without irrigation (I0) throughout the growing period. NM-92 raised with three irrigations (V2 I3) produced maximum grain yield (1295.1 kg per ha.) while NM-54 gave minimum grain yield of 754.8 kg per ha. When grown without irrigation throughout the growing period (V, I0).
