  Seven different plant densities ( 0.44, 0.53, 0.67, 0.8, 1.0, 1.3 and 2.0 million plants ha-1) and two weed control methods (manual and chemical), compared with no weeding as control, were evaluated in different combinations to find the best interaction for effective rust control and high production in garlic. The lowest value (65.33) of area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) was recorded in treatment where plant population @ 1 million ha-1 and hand weeding were used. Yield (14 t ha-1) and bulb index (4.6 cm) in this treatment were statistically at par with their respective highest values indicating that its performance was better than other treatments in rust control and garlic yield.

  This investigation describes the biosynthesis of xylanase by UV-treated strain of Aspergillus niger GCBMX-45. For this purpose, parental strains of Aspergillus niger was UV- irradiated for different time intervals (5-60 minutes). It was found that the strain treated for 45minutes gave the maximum yield of xylanase when different parameters were employed. Among different substrates and carbon sources, wheat bran (10g) and sucrose, respectively gave maximum production. Distilled water as a diluent and incubation period of 72 hours at 30oC were optimized for improved production under solid substrate fermentation conditions.

  To select drought tolerant and well adapted wheat varieties for barani condition of Kohat a study was carried out on wheat varieties to test their yield potential, yield stability and better adaptability to the rainfed agro-climatic conditions of kohat division. Overall yield performance in both the years was given by FD-91002 and Suliman-96. In 1997-98 FD-91002 and Inqilab-91 gave good performance according to earliness, bhoosa yield and grain yield kg ha-1 i.e. 6175 and 5759 kg ha-1 bhoosa and 4645 and 4242 kg ha-1 grain, respectively which was due to frequent and timely rainfall. While in 1998-99, rainfall was less and in that moisture stress conditions among the same test varieties Suliman-96 and FD-91019 gave highest grain yield of 2311 and 2233 kg ha-1.

  An experiment on the effect of different planting dates and spacing on the growth and yield of garlic cv. Bianco was carried out at Malakandher Research Farm, NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar during the year 1995-96. Four different plant spacing i.e. 4 cm, 8 cm, 12 cm and 16 cm were kept at four different planting dates i.e 1st. November, 15th November, 30th November and 15th December. The data revealed that both planting dates and spacing significantly affected the number of days to emergence, number of days to maturity, plant height, number of leaves/plant, number of cloves/bulb, bulb size, bulb weight and yield (Kg/ha) Maximum plant height (87.66 cm), number of leaves (8.10), number of cloves/bulb (34.46) bulb size (19.71 cm), bulb weight (44.80 g) and total yield (14166.66 kg/ha) were recorded in plants that were sown on 1st. November with plant spacing of 8 cm, while minimum values were recorded for the mentioned parameters in plots sown on 15th December with plant spacing of 4 cm. Maximum number of days to emergence (12.66) and maturity (198.0) were found in plants sown on 15th December with plant spacing of 4 cm. It is suggested that garlic should be sown before the mid of November with plant spacing of 8 cm under the agro-climatic conditions of Peshawar.

  It was observed that all the physiological parameters of sunflower were significantly effected by the various levels of N. Maximum plant height, number of leaves plant-1, leaf area and head diameter were obtained from the plots where N:P:K was applied @ 120:75:50 kg ha-1. However, maximum germination (82.7 %) was recorded in control treatment as well as where N alone @ 75 kg ha-1 was applied .

  New complexes of Amoxicillin with some transition metal ions such as Ag(I), Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) has been synthesized and characterized on the basis of physical, spectral and analytical data. These complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aurous, Pseudonomous aerugionosa. The metal complexes showed enhanced antibacterial activity as compared to simple antibiotic. The present study was carried out in the search of target antibiotic moiety instead of broad-spectrum antibiotic.

  Sixteen different cultures of Aspergillus niger were isolated from different soil samples. These isolates of Aspergillus niger were evaluated for citric acid fermentation in shake flask. Sucrose salt media was used and the volume of fermentation medium was kept at 25 ml. The cultural conditions such as pH (3.5), temperature (30°C), incubation period (8 days) and sugar concentration (15%), were optimised.

  Yield and forage quality was estimated for buffel grass, blue panic grass, love grass, napier grass and mott grass was estimated. Mott grass out-yielded all other grasses in terms of plant height (248 cm), number of tillers per plant (96), dry matter yield (22 t )ha -1 while love grass was least productive with plant height of 121 cm, dry matter yield of 2.9 t ha -1 and crude protein of 75.3 kgha -1. Mott grass may be regarded as the best choice for high forage yield and crude protein content in the Pothwar plateau conditions.

  Presence of auxins and high humidity in the initial stages of growth in vitro of 10-15 days old shoot cuttings is very essential for adventitious rooting in microsperma lentil in cultivar Masoor-85. The type and quantity of auxins is important. The basal segments of stem have more chances of rooting which gradually decreases for apical segments. Also age of shoots in culture has influence on rooting. Rooting is with normal polarity. Boron ( 30 mg/l) and MS (1/10 strength) salts in diluted concentration helps root induction and development. Moist peat and filter paper bridge both support rooting.

  The three row geometries were wheat planted in 30 cm apart row, 45 cm apart row and 30 cm apart rows with 3rd row skip. The eight weed control treatments were hand hoeing, mechanical hoeing, mechanical hoeing twice, Dicuran-MA, Tribunel, maize stalk mulch, harvesting of weed and seed increase rate. Among all the three row geometries, grain yield was higher in 45 cm apart rows than the usual method of planting in 30 cm row spacing. Tribunel application produced higher yield followed by mechanical hoeing twice. High 1000 grain weight was observed in the application of Tribunel, Dicuran-MA and the mulching of maize stalk. More grains/spike have been noted in the application of Tribunel. The lowest grain yield/ha, 1000 grain weight and grains/spike were recorded in the check

  The study was carried out to propagate olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars from hardwood cuttings with IBA (Indole butyric acid) at 2000, 4000 and 6000 ppm. IBA at 4000 ppm significantly promoted maximum sprouting (90%), highest survival (76.70%) and produced lengthy shoot (5.8 cm) for cultivar Domate and maximum number of roots 6.9 per cutting in the cultivar at 2000 ppm IBA. Root length in the cultivar was increased at 2000 ppm of IBA. The cultivar N.D. Belice was the 2nd best to give good response to various levels of growth regulator. The cuttings of the remaining cultivars showed little response to IBA.
