  The savanna agroecology of Nigeria was surveyed for the occurrence of wild rice-three species of the A-genome complex (O. barthii, O. glaberrima and O. longistaminata) were found to be endemic. A total of 32 accessions of these species, including O. sativa were studied in situ and ex situ. Chromosome studies revealed regular pairing as 12II in the accessions per se. The O. glaberrimaxO. sativa crosses showed a preponderance  of  bivalent  pairing  as  12II,  other  associations  like  24I,  10II  + 1IV, precocious movement at  Metaphase  I  and  occurrence  of  two  pairs  of  satellited  chromosomes.  The  crosses were infertile. The O. glaberrimaxO. barthii cross was highly pollen and spikelet-fertile. A modal chromosome association of 12II was recorded. A translocation was seen at pachynema. The O. barthiixO. sativa cross was sterile with only a  few  shriveled  seeds.  The chromosomes showed many associations at diakinesis and budding of microspores  was  experienced  during pollen mitosis. Some fertility was restored in the BC1 generation of the O. glaberrimaxO. sativa crosses; more fertility was restored in the BC1 F2. Fertility was not restored in the BC1F2 of the backcrosses involving O. glaberrima. Various meiotic disturbances were monitored in the backcross generations. Rice farming in the savanna agroecology of Nigeria (particularly in Jebba) is a peasant affair in small holdings circumscribed by wild rice. This creates an opportunity for natural hybridization. The population dynamics and phylogeny of the A-genome complex are enunciated based on this fact and the results of the cytogenetic studies carried out.

  This study was conducted to investigate the comparative effects of seeding rates of two plants per hill and one plant, per hill on the yield components of DTPMFE+, an enhanced rice cultivar. The design of the field experiment was Randomized Complete Block with replications on a fenced plot of 18.00x4.00 m. A potted experiment was carried out in ten four litre buckets. At maturity panicle characteristics and number of tillers of plants randomly selected were measured. In the field population, there was no significant difference in total number of spikelets, number and length of primary branches, number and length of secondary branches, panicle length, panicle density and number of tillers. Significant differences were observed in grain length and grain width one plant per hill had higher values than two plants per hill. In the potted population, there was significant difference in total number of spikelets, length of primary branches, number and length of secondary branches, number and length of primary branches and panicle length; one plant per hill still showed higher values. Two plants per hill could not influence the yield components for better yield.

  DTPMFe+ along with its parent AWGU-DWARF-W and IJ86-W were evaluated under a planting spacing of 15X30 cm for morphological and yield contributing parameters. DTPMFe+ showed a selection gain over it parents in plant height (Dwarf), tillering (heavy), maturity date (early), panicle length (long), number of spikelets per panicle (dense), caryopsis size (long and slender), erect plant form, erect flag leaf and leaf below flag leaf, awnlessness, synchronization of booting, all tillers bearing panicles. DPTMFe+ produced a better pattern of protein distribution in the transverse section of the grain than the parents; with fewer protein bodies in the aleurone layer which will preserves its protein during grain milling.
