  Many studies have investigated the potential of using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) interleukin-6 levels for the diagnosis of meningitis, but they have often provided contradictory results. This critical scientific literature review summarizes various methods used for the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis, including IL-6 assays and the diagnostic power of CSF IL-6 as a biomarker of bacterial meningitis, between 2000 and 2016. An analysis of data from 9 studies involving 292 patients with bacterial meningitis revealed that sample sizes of patients with bacterial meningitis ranged from 9-85. Molecular methods were used to diagnose bacterial meningitis in only one of these studies. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were used in 5 of these studies to determine CSF IL-6 levels. The reported area-under the curve (AUC) varied from 0.660-0.988 and in 6 out of 8 (75%) studies it was >0.937. The CSFIL-6 cut-off values for the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis ranged from 90 pg dL–1 to 51.6 ng mL–1 and the sensitivity and specificity of the assays ranged from 61.9-100 and 51-100%, respectively. Different methods were used to determine CSF IL-6 levels and the identification of bacterial meningitis was mostly based on culture without an associated molecular method. There is a need to standardize methods to ensure accurate diagnoses. Further studies that recruit a large number of patients with bacterial meningitis are required to validate these findings.

  Background: To analyze whether the determination of interleukin-6 levels in cerebrospinal fluid is useful as a biomarker for the severity of bacterial meningitis. Methodology: Cerebrospinal fluid was obtained from 120 patients aged 0-15 years with meningitis. They were classified as having bacterial meningitis (n = 85) or aseptic meningitis (n = 35) according to the cerebrospinal fluid white blood cell count, microbiological culture and molecular methods. Interleukin-6 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: No significant change in the mean interleukin-6 level on the basis of clinical signs was observed in patients with bacterial meningitis. However, the cerebrospinal fluid total protein level was elevated in patients with alertness problems (3.41±2.26 g L–1). There was a significant correlation (Pearson correlation p≤0.05) between the cerebrospinal fluid glucose and total protein levels in patients with bacterial meningitis. The mean cerebrospinal fluid interleukin-6 level (4,472.0±2,494.52 pg mL–1) in patients with bacterial meningitis whose disease outcome was fatal was significantly higher (p≤0.05) than that of those who survived the disease (2,983.28±2,612.13 pg mL–1). Conclusion: Interleukin-6 is a potential biomarker for identifying bacterial meningitis patients with a high risk of death who require intensive care.

  Cucurbit seeds are commonly consumed in Niger. In previous studies we determined the protein, fat, minerals, fatty acids, tocopherols and β-carotene contents. The aim of this study was to determine the polyphenol, total flavonoids, condensed tannins contents and the antioxidant capacity of the seeds of the 17 varieties of L. siceraria species and a single variety of C. colocynthis belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. The variance analysis showed a very significant difference between the varieties for the parameters studied. Indeed, in all of the seeds, the results showed the existence of an antioxidant activity that vary from 3.7-114 μmol EAA/100 g. The phytochemical screening showed fluctuating levels of phenolics from 79.2-203 mg/100 g, flavonoids from 0.08-17.9 mg kg-1 and tannins from 0.05-1 mg kg-1. There is a positive correlation between the antioxidant activity and the polyphenol content (r = 0.79) on the one hand and on the other hand between the polyphenol and flavonoids content (r = 0.76). This study on Cucurbitaceae seeds, highlights their biological potentialities and can therefore contribute to the fight against proliferative diseases such as (type 2 diabetes and hypertension) in Niger.

  Objective: It is assessed whether the measurement of interleukin-6 in the cerebrospinal fluid can serve as a biomarker for the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. Methodology: Cerebrospinal fluid was obtained from 152 patients aged 0-15 years suspected of having meningitis. These patients were classified into the following groups: Bacterial meningitis (n = 85), aseptic meningitis (n = 35) and non-meningitis/control (n = 32) based on leukocyte count and bacterial identification by culture and molecular biology. Interleukin-6 concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: This study found a significant difference of the mean cerebrospinal fluid interleukin-6 level (p≤0.01) between patients with bacterial meningitis (3,538.69±2,560.78 pg mL–1) and patients with aseptic meningitis (332.51±470.69 pg mL–1) or those of the control group (205.83±79.39 pg mL–1). There was also a significant difference of the mean cerebrospinal fluid interleukin-6 level between patients with aseptic meningitis and those of the control group. Interleukin-6 had the highest area under the ROC curve: 0.94 (95% confidence interval: 0.901-0.979) compared to that of cerebrospinal fluid glucose and total protein. At a cut-off value of 1,065.96 pg mL–1, interleukin-6 had a sensitivity of 76.2% and specificity of 100%. Conclusion: Interleukin-6 is a potential biomarker for the differential diagnosis of meningitis.

  Seeds from 17 varieties of Laganaria siceraria and 1 variety of Citrullus colocynthis were analyzed for their proximate amino acids composition. These seeds were produced on the Abdou Moumouni University, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, experimental field. The seeds showed significant difference in their protein content: Lagenaria siceraria (29.45 g/100 g), Citrullus colocynthis (12.40 g/100 g) but were closely related in their amino acids profile. Glutamic, aspartic acids and arginine were the most abundant amino acids while Total Sulphur Amino Acids (TSAA = methionine + cystine) were the limiting amino acids. Leucine was the most concentrated essential amino acid. The percentages of essential amino acids of the seeds were also closely related: Lagenaria siceraria (42.85%) and Citrullus colocynthis (41.51%). Despite a similar amino acids profile, the chemical concentrations of each amino acid were significantly different between varieties (p<0.001) exception of leucine (p = 0.06), showing that the varieties have some genetic differences. In L. siceraria seeds, TSAA ranged from 3.26% to 4.35% and Total Aromatic Amino Acids (TAAA) ranged from 27.14 to 30.55%. In C. colocynthis seeds the concentrations were 4.5 and 27.99%, respectively. When comparing the amino acids in these varieties with the recommended FAO/WHO provisional pattern, the seeds were adequate in histidine, TAAA, threonine and TSAA but supplementation was required for lysine in all varieties and for isoleucine, leucine and valine in some varieties. Predicted Protein Efficiency Ratios (PER) was 1.98 in C. colocynthis and ranged from 1.81 to 2.33 in L. siceraria.
