  Thirty one Holstein Friesian cows were allocated to two groups. For a period of 7 weeks, twice a week, the behavior of each cow was registered for 9 h (07:00, 09.00, 10.00, 11.00, 13:00, 14.00, 15.00, 17.00 and 19:00 h) eating, drinking, ruminating, standing, resting, locomotor and other behaviors were recorded. The frequencies of eating, drinking, ruminating, standing, resting, locomotor and other behaviors for bedding and nonbedding usage groups were 32.9 and 34.6% (p>0.05); 1.7, 2.6% (p<0.01); 20.3 and 20.5% (p>0.05); 20.5 and 28.4% (p<0.01); 14.8 and 7.9% (p<0.01); 8.5 and 4.4% (p<0.01) and 1.7 and 1.5% (p>0.05), respectively. The percentage of the eating behavior of cows of the bedding group at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 17:00 observations were higher than the nonbedding group, while the other results at different observation hours show reverse results. As a result, the amount of time cows spend resting is higher in the bedding group, which is considered to significantly influence their comfort level. Resting behavior is an indicator of animal welfare and as such, this result suggests that bedding usage in loose housing systems provides a more comfortable and socially interactive environment that satisfies conditions of a more positive animal experience.

  Commercial trammel prawn nets were used during 40 nights at various phases of lunar months during May-October, 2002 period in Izmir bay (Aegean sea). The most dominant eight bycatch species and one target species (Melicertus kerathurus ) (by numbers per fishing day) were used in the statistical analyses to compare the differences in catch numbers within each species during a standart lunar month. Using the Kruskal-Wallis test significant (p<0.05) differences in mean catch rates between moon phases were exhibited by Melicertus kerathurus (p = 0.011), Bolinus brandaris (p = 0.001), Squilla mantis (p = 0.041) and Mullus barbatus (p = 0.033). In contrast, Goneplax rhomboides, Diplodus annularis, Arnoglossus laterna, Microchirus variegatus and Solea solea showed no significant differences in catch numbers according to moon phases. Results suggest that target species and some of the most dominant bycatch species exhibit behaviour related to lunar cycle with implications for sustainable management.

  This study was planned to investigate the effect of aditional lyzozyme to milk on growth performances of Holstein calves. About 15 female and 18 male Holstein calves were used in this study. Between day 4 and 60, calves were fed with whole milk from a pail twice a day such that each calf received 228 L whole milk (4 L day-1) over the whole experiment. All calves were fed ad libitum with calf starter along with alfalfa hay. Calves was fed with milk which is additional (10 mg L-1) lysozyme during milk fed period. During 0-35 days period of the experiment, lysozyme supplementation decreased daily gain and increased feed to gain ratio (p<0.05) and male calve had higher daily gain, feed intake and better feed to gain ratio in the same period (p<0.01). The effects of lysozyme and gender on daily gain and feed to gain ratio have disappeared during 35-60 days period. Lysozyme decreased feed intake (p<0.05) during 35-60 days of experiment. Similarly overall feed intake, daily gain and feed to gain ratio were not affected by lysozyme (p>0.05). Male calve had higher daily gain and weaning weight and lower feed to gain ratio than female calve throughout the study (p<0.05). Lysozyme x gender interaction affected feed intake in all experimental period and male receiving control diet had higher feed intake than female but lysozyme supplemented male calves had lower feed intake than female ones (p<0.05). The results revealed that lysozyme may deteriorate of adaptation of the microflora of the gastrointestinal system of 5 weeks old calves and be tended to decrease diarrhea cases during preweaning period.

  In this study, the width/length-weight relationships of the blue crab population (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1986) living in Camlik Lagoon Lake (Adana) were investigated considering sex and maturity. A total of 743 samples were collected and analyzed. The Carapace Width (CW) distribution ranged from 2.30 to 17.80 cm and the weight distribution ranged from 0.70 to 301 g. Carapace width/carapace length-weight relationships was found to be as W = 0.4782CL3.106 (R = 0.987) and W = 0.0902CW2.932 (R = 0.982).

  In this study, length and weight data are presented for 33 fish species inhabiting littoral habitats off the Yumurtalik coast. Samples were collected with combined gill and trammel nets. Parameters of the length-weight relationships were estimated for 14 species. The b values ranged between 2.35 and 3.53. For remained 19 species, the parameter a was estimated by setting b = 3.0.
