  Methanol extract of Allium sativum was investigated for in vitro antibacterial activity against H. pylori using standard strain ATCC 43504 and three clinical isolates (UCH97009, UCH99041 and UCH99052) and also for anti ulcer effect in rat. All the strains except UCH99041 were inhibited by thefinal concentration of the tested extract (6 mg mL-1) to varying degrees. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) against all susceptible strains ranged between 153 and 625 μg mL-1. Urease activity of both UCH97009 and UCH99052 strains decreased with increase in the concentration of the extract while the cell surface hydrophobicity of two of the strains was reduced by the extract as there was no aggregation of the cell by the extract. SAT titre was >3.0 M. Methanol extract of A. sativum reduced mean ulcer score from 13.63±1.33 in control to 10.06±1.27 in extract treated. The anti- ulcer effect was however not significant (p>0.05). The acute toxicity test (intraperitonial administration) methanol extract in mice gave LD50 of 8.7 g kg-1 body weight. The result indicates that Allium sativum taken at a low dose may have some therapeutics potentials against gastric ulcers associated with H. pylori infection.

  The effects of Monosodium glutamate (MSG) on gastric acid secretion, gastric mucus secretion and gastric ulceration were studied in adult albino rats of Wistar strain. The treated animals were given subcutaneous injection of 0.6 mg g-1 MSG for 30 days. Mean basal gastric acid secretion in control versus MSG treated rats were not significantly different; 1.45±0.06 vs 1.40±0.02 (p>0.05). However, MSG significantly increased histamine-induced gastric acid secretion with time (p<0.05). Mean ulcer scores and gastric mucus secretion were significantly higher in MSG-treated animals than in the control (p<0.05). The values are 7.63±1.02/15.75±1.43 and 5.95±0.51/12.75±0.78, respectively. MSG was found to produce nonuniform histopathologic changes in gastric mucosa, which were characterized by edematous lamina propria containing increased numbers of inflammatory cells, vascular congestion and disruption with lifting rupture.

  Leaf extracts of Parquetina nigrescens (AAfz.) Bullock, a plant commonly employed for the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders in Nigeria was tested for antimicrobial activity and gastro-intestinal protective effect. Aqueous leaf extract showed antimicrobial activity against a range of bacteria in the following order of activity: Staphylococcus aureus > Salmonella typhi > Proteus mirabilis > Pseudomonas aeruginosa > Bacillus subtilis > Proteus vulgaris, whereas the ethanol extract was effective only against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi. The aqueous extract also significantly reduced gastric acid secretion, reduced ethanol-induced gastric ulceration (p<0.05) and caused elevation in gastric mucus secretion. The antimicrobial activity against the common pathogenic microbes S. aureus, S. typhi and P. aeruginosa may account for its acclaimed potency against diarrhea. In addition, its protective effect against oral administration of absolute ethanol reflected by the increased mucus secretion and decreased gastric acid secretion may also be responsible for its claim as having anti-ulcer property.
