  The kinetics and residue of chloramphenicol in the various tissues of the Sokoto red goats has been studied using colorimetric assay method. The results indicate that, Variable concentrations of chloramphenicol were detected 5 min after a single intravenous dose of the drug (25 mg kg 1) in various tissues of the animal. The drug persisted up to 240 h (10 days) in the skeletal muscle of the goats. The kinetics of the drug also show variation among the various tissues considered. These findings are of public health significance.

  The acute and subchronic (repeat dose) oral toxicity of aqueous root extract of Securidaca longepedunculata was evaluated in mice. In the acute toxicity test, oral administration of limit dose of 5 g kg-1 of the extract produced neither mortality nor any acute signs of toxicity throughout the 14 days period of observation. In the subchronic toxicity study, there was no mortality recorded among the animals when varying doses of the extract (300, 900 and 2700 mg kg-1 body weight) were administered orally for 28 days consecutively. The weekly body and organ weights of the mice showed no significant differences between the control and the mice treated with the extract except on the last week (day 28) where there was significant increase (p<0.05) in the body weight of mice treated with 2,700 mg kg-1 of the extract. In the haematological analysis, there were significant (p<0.05) decrease in the Red Blood Cell (RBC) count at 2700 mg kg-1 and in Packed Cell Volume (PCV) of mice treated with 300 and 2,700 mg kg-1 of the extract, while the differential leucocytes count showed no differences in any of the parameter examined. Also, there was no significant changes in the biochemical parameters tested. There was neither any gross lesion nor histopathological changes observed in the organs (liver, kidney and brain) examined. These findings suggest that the aqueous root extract of S. longepedunculata could be relatively safe when administered orally in mice.

  This review examines medicinal plants, which have been reported to have hypotensive or antihypertensive effects. It pays particular attention but not totally restricted to plants whose antihypertensive effects have been scientifically validated. The main aim of the review is to piece together information on this subject, so as to raise more awareness, prevent duplication of efforts and possibly bring more attention to medicinal plants as a veritable source of antihypertensive drug. As the review ended, it was possible to conclude that, a lot of efforts are still needed not only in the validation of the plants but also in the areas of identifying the active principles in these medicinal plants and the conduct of clinical trials in humans.

  A comparative pharmacokinetic study of chloramphenicol (25 mg kg-1 intravenous) by colorimetric assay method in tissues/organs of healthy goats and Salmonella typhimurium infected goats has revealed that, the drug was present in high concentrations in various tissues at 0.08 h (5 min) post-drug administration except in the brain of healthy goats and skeletal muscle of both healthy and infected goats. The average concentrations of the drug in the liver, kidney, spleen, bone marrow, lungs, heart and brain were higher after the infection. The residence period of the drug was higher in the kidney and the skeletal muscle of the healthy goats (240 h; 10 days). There were however decrease in the half-lives, elimination rate constants of the drug in the liver, kidney, spleen, brain, heart and skeletal muscle after the infection. The present study indicated that, a single dose of intravenous chloramphenicol injection can persist up to 10 days and a shorter period (5 days) in the edible tissues of the healthy and Salmonella infected goats, respectively. The presence of chloramphenicol in some edible tissues for up to 10 days is of public health significance.
