  The effects of photosynthetate demand on photosynthetic activity of pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) trees cv. Owhadi, which are characterized by strong alternate bearing were studied. Changes in seasonal leaf gas exchange, the amount of chlorophyll, leaves dry weight, leaf area and leaf specific weight in fruit bearing branches of ON trees and non-fruit bearing branches of OFF trees were determined. Rate of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, leaf mesophyll efficiency of ON trees measured forty and seventy Days After Full Blooming (DAFB) were significantly higher than those of OFF trees. Seventy DAFB, rates of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration rates and leaf mesophill efficiency decreased in the two three groups, so that after this period there was no significant difference between ON and OFF trees with respect to these parameters. There was a decrease in internal CO2 concentration with the increase in photosynthetic rates. The amount of chlorophyll was higher in ON trees. However, the differences were only significant hundred and hundred thirty DAFB. Leaves on tress were smaller and had less weight than OFF trees. Leaf specific weights of OFF trees at hundred thirty and hundred sixty DAFB were significantly higher than that of ON trees.

  This study was conducted to test the effects of different concentrations (0, 0.3 and 0.6%) of nitrogen and application dates (May 6, June 17 and July 18) on flower bud retention of pistachio (cv. Owhadi) trees. The results showed that nitrogen significantly increased the flower bud retention, nitrogen level of leaf, current shoot and bud, photosynthesis rate, chlorophyll content and leaf area. Nitrogen was more effective in increasing flower bud retention of pistachio trees when applied at 0.3% on June 17. Abscission of flower buds decreased progressively as nitrogen content in leaf, current shoot and flower bud and also leaf area increased. It was concluded that application of nitrogen to the pistachio trees might be a useful method in decreasing flower bud abscission and increasing crop in the following year.

  The present study aims to evaluate the seedling behaviour of Amygdalous scoparia, A. webbii and A. orientalis at the inter-specific level. The analysis of variance showed a significant difference between species. However, A. scoparia had highest stem height and leaf length. At the end of the experiment, the thickest stems were developed by A. scoparia, whereas the thinnest stems by A. orientalis. A. webbii produced more number and longer roots per seedling than the other two species. The correlation between various morphological traits showed that a few shoot characters were significantly correlated with root traits. However, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, root number and root diameter for P. webbii and leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length and root number characters for P. scoparia and stem height, leaf number, leaf length, petiole length, internode length and root number for P. orientalis were found to be important morphological traits to evaluate seedling charactristics of wild almond genotypes before their nursery test.

  Kolkhong (Pistacia khinjuk Stocks) is a native tree of Iran. Economically, its importance is known in the production of edible pistachio nuts when grafted with Pistacia vera. Its role in soil stabilization has been appreciably recognized in the recent past. This study concerns the determination of the effect of scarification by sulfuric acid (98%), cold stratification at 5+1°C (10, 20, 30 and 40 days) and gibberellic acid (100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mg L-1) on the germination of Kolkhong seeds which have a dormancy period with low germination percentage. The results showed that Kolkhong had physical and internal dormancy. Scarification of seeds using cold acid for 20 min, followed by stratification for the period of 30-40 days or soaked in concentrations of 500-1000 mg L gibberellic acid gave the highest percentage of seed germination.
