  Welfare of growing bulls was evaluated using on-farm scoring modified by well-described test theory methods. Production parameters of the bulls were collected at slaughter. A positive relationship was observed between on-farm welfare, using the full A-Index score, and daily carcass gain of bulls. This association was not observed with the more consistently defined welfare using the partial A-Index with selected items. Space allowance, feeding method, ration formulation and dehorning status at group level were the most important measured factors associated with daily carcass gain of the bulls. Given this association and the cohort design of the study, it is hypothesised that there is a causative relationship between the underlying welfare concept and daily carcass gain.

  The objectives of the study with growing dairy heifers were to determine the effects on animal performance of (1) concentrate level and (2) the concentrate composition in the grass silage-based diet. Animals (30 heifers) were randomly assigned to three feeding treatments: (1) low level (1.75 kg dry matter (DM)/d) of rolled barley (LB); (2) low level (1.75 kg DM/d) of commercial pelleted concentrate (LC); and (3) medium level (3.5 kg DM/d) of commercial pelleted concentrate (MC). All animals were also offered grass silage and hay. The commercial concentrate contained more crude protein than barley grain (135 g/kg DM vs. 205 g/kg DM). The data were analysed using analysis of variance and differences between the treatments were tested by orthogonal contrasts: LC vs. MC and LB vs. LC. The growth of the heifers increased and carcass conformation improved with increasing concentrate level. Commercial concentrate did not improve animal performance compared with barley grain.

  This study was conducted to determine the effects of barley processing method on the performance of pre-weaned dairy calves. The experiment comprised 12 bull calves which were offered either dry-rolled (DR) or dry-rolled plus steam-processed (DRSP) barley. During the pre-weaning period (from 14 to 56 days of age) the dry matter and energy intakes of the DRSP calves were higher than those of the DR calves (p<0.1). During weaning (56−70 days) and on average over the whole experiment (14−70 days) there were no differences in intake. The weight gain of the DRSP calves was 32% higher than that of the DR calves during the pre-weaning period (p<0.05). During weaning the DR calves grew 33% faster than the DRSP calves (p<0.1). There was no difference in gain on average over the whole experiment. This study indicates no need for steam-processing of barley offered to dairy calves.
