  Optical Bursts Switching (OBS) is a flexible yet efficient photonic switching paradigm. However, due to their one-way resource reservation mechanism, OBS networks experience high bursts (thus packets) loss rate. In OBS networks, the contention is resolved either by dropping one of the contending bursts, or more efficiently by dropping from one of the contending bursts only the parts that overlap with the other burst. In both situations, only one data source will suffer the data loss in favor to the other. In this study a simple yet effective network resource allocation algorithm is presented. With this algorithm, the dropped segments are selected evenly from both contending data bursts. Furthermore, the truncated data bursts (forwarded or deflected) are guaranteed to be larger than the minimum burst-length allowed by the network specification. Additionally, the algorithm is demonstrated to be practical if used in a mechanism to provide differentiated services to IP packets over an OBS network. A simulation is used to evaluate the performance of the algorithm.

  In this study, the remote boot process of an operating system was looked into to determine how an optimized solution using the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) process could be created. This study focuses on Windows CE remote boot implementation in an embedded homogeneous computing environment. Instead of a DOS shell environment and a bootloader, this research demonstrates the use of PXE pre-OS environment to introduce the OS bootloading process, which allows a linear address space Windows CE boot image to be downloaded directly to the remote client machine system memory by using PXE. In addition, the use of optimized PXE pre-OS stage to perform the typical bootloading process and the use of the PXE OS boot stage to download the linear address space Windows CE boot image is shown. The result is a quicker remote boot solution customized for Windows CE which illustrated how PXE and an operating system could be built to produce a quicker remote boot boot-up experience.

  In this study, a new approach that utilizes availability, security and time as selection criteria between different replicas is proposed. However, selecting the replica in accordance with the three factors simultaneously is complicated; therefore, concepts from the K-means clustering algorithm were adopted to create a balanced (best) solution. Numerical simulations were carried out to assess the proposed technique. The results show that the proposed system outperforms random algorithm by 17% and outperforms the round robin algorithm by 11%.
