  Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the major crops, vegetables grown in Malaysia and belongs to family Solanaceae. Pepper is suffering from many illnesses caused by fungi, bacteria and virus. The fungal disease is both seed and air borne and affect the germination of seeds and plant vital to a greater extent. Biological control by antagonistic microorganisms is widely recognized as a promising method for control plant diseases. This study reports the effectiveness of using Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) cultures or their supernatant as a biological control against anthracnose disease in chilli caused by fungus Colletotrichum capsici. From 324 lactic acid bacteria isolated from different sources, seven isolates showed good inhibition activity against C. capsici by Dual Overlay Method. The supernatant from LAB-C5 showed strong inhibition to fungal growth evaluated using microtitter plates. Seeds infected with C. capsici followed by treatment with LAB-C5 cells showed better seed germination rate than seed treated with supernatant. Fungi infected seeds fail to grow. The results indicate that LAB-C5 has potential to be used biological control against C. capsici to replace the use of chemical fungicide to treat chilli seeds.

  Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) were isolated from different fermented fruits and vegetables and screened for antifungal activity against chilli phytopathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Seven LAB showed antifungal activity as observed in the dual overlay assay method. These LAB grew between 10 and 45°C, pH 4.4 and 9.6 (except 1 isolate), 6.5 and 18% NaCl. Fungi infected seeds from four species of chilli were evaluated for germination rate with and without LAB treatments. LAB isolated C5 showed good fungal inhibition and allowed good seed germination and was identified as Lactobacillus plantarum using API CH50L kit. The results indicate that C5 has the potential to be used as a biological control for treatment of chilli seeds against C. gloeosporioides to replace the use of chemical fungicides.

  The objective of this study was isolation, identification of lactic acid bacteria from different source and testing their antifungal activity against phytopathogens fungi C. capsici and C. gloeosporioides. The isolates were identified by their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and their antifungal activity was performed by the overlay method. Seven LAB isolates were showed good antifungal activity against phytopathogens fungi and were grew at different temperatures, pH and NaCl. However, C5 and G7 have the ability to inhibit the growth of both target phytopathogens fungi compared to other isolates. C5 and G7 identified by API 50CHL kit as Lactobacillus plantarum and the identified by used 16S rDNA was Lactobacillus plantarum C5 and L. pentosus G7. This is the first study that observed LAB isolates L. plantarum C5 and L. pentosus G7 inhibited both of C. capsici and C. gloesporeioides in vitro. This study demonstrates that the LAB L. plantarum C5 and L. pentosus G7 have potential to be used as biological control of this phytopathogen by inhibiting the mycelia growth.
