  Monoterpene glycosides have been isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of Indigofera hetrantha and their structures assigned to be 3,7-dimethyl-2(E),6-octadien-5-one-1-O-β-D-6-O-acetylglucopyranoside (1) and 3,7-dimethyl-2(E), 6-octadien-5-one-1-O-[-β-D-6’’-O-acetylglucopyra-nosyl (1’’ → 6’)-β-D-glucopyranoside] (2), on the basis of spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Compounds 1 and 2 displayed moderate inhibitory potential against the enzyme lipoxygenase.

  Seven cotton (Gossypitn hirsuturn L.) varieties were evaluated for growth and utilization efficiency of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), in hydroponics using modified Johnson's solutions containing adequate (6.0 mM N and 0.20 mM P), and deficient levels of N (0.8 mM) and P (0.01 mM). Substantial differences were observed among varieties for accumulation of shoot dry weight (SDW), relative reduction in shoot biomass due to N-deficiency (NSF), and uptake by shoot in case of N, and root dry weight (RDW), root:shoot ratio (RSR), relative reduction in shoot biomass due to P-deficiency (PSF), concentration in shoot and uptake by shoot in case of P. Variety SLS-1 exhibited the minimum stress at N-deficiency (NSF = 34%) as well as P-deficiency (PSF = 59%) among all the varieties. A negative correlation (r =0.555, n =35) between SDW and RSR in P-stressed plants suggested increase RDW production at the cost SDW. Utilization efficiency in varieties remained unchanged in case of N-deficiency stress and decreased in case of P-deficiency stress as compared to control, and in both the cases differences among varieties remained statistically non-significant. Nutrient level X variety interaction was significant for all the parameters studied in case of P, whereas for N, the interaction was significant only for shoot dry weight, stress factor and uptake by shoot.

  Pedigree and performance of 878 Nili-Ravi buffaloes progeny of 38 sires maintained for 47 years were recorded at Livestock Production Institute, Bahadurnagar, Okara, Pakistan. The phenotypic correlations of age at first calving with lifetime milk yield, productive life, herd life and coefficient of reproductive ability were negative and significant. However, the phenotypic correlation (0.03) between age at first calving and longevity was non-significant. The genetic correlations of age at first calving with lifetime milk production, productive life, herd life, longevity and the coefficient of reproductive ability were -0.52, -0.41, -0.44, -0.11 and -0.60, respectively. These negative and significant genetic correlations indicated that reduction in age at first calving in buffaloes would help to improve lifetime milk yield, longevity and reproductive ability as a correlated response.

  Response of various population densities towards yield was tested in Pajnad-88, Pirsabak-85 and Chakwal-86 under natural rainfed conditions. Harvest index, spike length, number of spikelets/spike, grains/spike tend to decrease significantly with increase in seed rate. Plant height and grain weight was not significantly affected by seed rate. Maximum yield was obtained with seed rate of 60 kg ha–1.

  85 new wheat selections were assessed and compared with the three standard local checks based on the combined analysis in five preliminary wheat yield trials. The combined analysis has the advantage by improving the selection efficiency of the new genotypes tested in different yield trials conducted in the same year and location. Seven out of the total selections tested out yielded the standard check varieties after making the adjustments in the treatment means. This analysis gave an equal chance to the new selections tested in the different trials which otherwise may have been overlooked.

  A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the response of six cotton cultivars to soil-applied N fertilization rates-low (50 mg N kg–1 soil) and adequate (175 mg N kg–1 soil). Substantial differences were observed among varieties and due to nitrogen level×variety interaction for accumulation of Shoot Dry Matter (SDM) and N utilization efficiency and nitrogen contents in leaf and stem. Increase in N rate in soil showed significant increase in shoot dry matter, N concentrations and contents in leaf and stem and decrease in root:shoot ratio.Cotton cultivars FH-634, CIM-1100 and S-12 showed nitrogen utilization efficiency >50 at both the nitrogen levels.
