  Plant regeneration from the cotyledons of C. olitorius has recently been optimized at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI). One of the major constraints of getting plant regeneration from the explants of C. olitorius was the production of healthy seedlings in vitro. An efficient seed germination system and healthy seedling production have been established at BJRI. Seeds of different varieties (O4, O9897, OM1 and O72) of C. olitorius germinated on both agar supported hormone free MS medium and cotton supported hormone free liquid MS medium. The percentage of seeds germinated on cotton supported medium was found to be much higher than seeds germinated on agar supported medium. This system ensured maximum of an average of 98% seed germination. Whereas, in case of agar-supported medium an average of 46% seeds could be germinated with very slow growth. The seedlings grown on cotton supported medium were found to be much more healthily than seedlings grown on agar supported medium. Plant regeneration was obtained from the cotyledonary petioles of the varieties (O4, O9897, OM1 and O72) of C. olitorius on MS agar solidified medium supplemented by IAA 0.5 and BAP 3.0 mg l-1. The efficiency of plant regeneration from the cotton supported seedlings was found to be as good as the agar supported seedlings. The plantlets produced roots on hormone free MS medium readily. After transfer to soil the plants grew into maturity and produced fruits. No morphological changes were noticed.

  The experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance of lentil-wheat mixed and intercropping system. Positive variation in different yield contributing characters except 1000seed weight of lentil and wheat to 40% of wheat seed rate and 1:1 line sowing were noticed indicating the agronomic suitability of mixed and intercropping of lentil and wheat in those practices. Line sowing performed better than sole broadcast sowing. All mixed seed rate decreased lentil yield but LER was increased in all the treatments over the sole crop lentil as broadcast. The maximum LER (1.52), monetary advantage (63%), benefit cost ratio (1.84) were achieved in lentil and 40% wheat as mixed cropping system.

  Field experiment was conducted with three cultivated varieties of C. capsularis and of C. olitorius to study the performances of yield and yield contributing characters at four harvest stages, 50, 70, 90 and 110 days. Wide ranges of co-efficient of variation was observed in each harvest stage in three characters. Two morphological characters, plant height and base diameter have been used for selection of jute plants with higher fibre yield. However, for selection purpose, these method needs a long time to wait until flowering. An early selection method was developed by studying morphological components and fibre yield. Using these methods breeders can do their selection process earlier prior to maturity e.g., at 70 or 90 days age of the plants. This could enable jute breeders to discard most of the segregating population for higher fibre yield at an earlier stage, which could save considerable amounts of time and labour.
