  Blood plays an important role in many biological processes and circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in the blood have been reported to be biomarkers for various physiological and pathological states. However, few studies have examined porcine blood miRNAs, especially arterial blood miRNAs. Here, researchers sequenced the microRNAomes of porcine arterial and venous blood samples in which we identified 277 and 294 known porcine miRNAs, respectively. In both blood samples, highly expressed miRNAs were implicated in erythropoiesis and angiogenesis. A total of 57 miRNAs showed significantly different expression levels (p<0.01) between arterial and venous blood of which seven were enriched in arterial blood and five were enriched in venous blood by more than a 1.5 fold change. Interestingly, functional enrichment analysis of the genes predicted to be targeted by the enriched miRNAs indicated that arterial blood was mainly associated with the immune response and venous blood was primarily associated with apoptosis and the hypoxia response. The results suggest that the 12 miRNAs with differential expression should be considered as biomarkers for physiological differences between arterial and venous blood and that they may help promote the further molecular diagnosis of blood.

  A series of hexacatenar liquid crystals containing the 1,3,4-oxadiazole group as rigid core, i.e. 1,4-bis[(3,4,5-trialkoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazolyl]- benzene (P-P-oxd-n), were designed and synthesised. Based on a detailed study of their thermotropic phase behaviour and mesophase structures, it was revealed that columnar phases are generated in these materials. Furthermore, combination of experimental and calculated results enabled a proposal for the molecular packing in the mesophase. The photoluminescent properties of these materials were examined using P-P-oxd-8 as an example. A strong blue light emission (λmax = 456 nm) was observed in P-P-oxd-8 and a higher quantum yield was obtained in dilute chloroform solution.

  Polyimide (PI) films with thin cobalt oxide (Co3O4) layers on both film sides have been prepared via a surface modification and ion-exchange technique. The method works by hydrolyzing the PI film surfaces in aqueous potassium hydroxide solution and incorporating Co2+ into the hydrolyzed layers of PI film via subsequent ion exchange, and followed by thermal treatment in ambient atmosphere. The PI composite films were characterized by Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractions, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analyses, as well as surface resistance and mechanical measurements. By varying the absorbed cobalt ion content, a series of PI/Co3O4 composite films with insulative to semiconductive surfaces were obtained. The room temperature surface resistances of the semiconductive composite films reached to about 107Ω. The Co3O4 particle formed on PI film surfaces was in the range of 10-40 nm. The final composite films maintained the essential mechanical properties and thermal stability of the pristine PI films. The adhesion between surface Co3O4 layers and PI matrix was acceptable.
