  Aims  The aim was to examine the impact of Type 1 diabetes and having any other diabetes-related complication or comorbidity on healthcare charges and utilization in patients with diabetic neuropathy (DN).

Methods  We selected individuals aged < 65 years who continuously enrolled in a large US commercial plan from July 2004 to June 2006 and who received at least one diagnosis of DN at any time from July 2004 to June 2005. We compared the prevalence of other diabetes-related complications or comorbidities between patients with Type 1 and with Type 2 diabetes. In patients with DN with or without any other diabetes-related complication or comorbidity, we used multivariate regression to assess the marginal contribution of Type 1 diabetes on healthcare charges and utilization from July 2005 until June 2006.

Results  The majority of DN patients had at least one other diabetes-related complication or comorbidity. Most of the DN patients had Type 2 diabetes. DN patients with Type 1 diabetes had more comorbid medical conditions than those with Type 2 diabetes. Compared with Type 2, Type 1 patients had a higher prevalence of each individual non-DN diabetes-related complication or comorbidity, except heart disease. Controlling for comorbidities, Type 1 and Type 2 patients with DN but no other diabetes-related complication or comorbidity had similar healthcare utilization. However, Type 1 patients had significantly higher charges than those with any other diabetes-related complication or comorbidity.

Conclusions  Many patients with DN have Type 1 diabetes and other common diabetes-related complications or comorbidities, which can have a significant impact on healthcare charges and utilization.

  The vanishing line is a very important feature in the projective geometry. It has been used in the camera calibration for a long time. This paper introduced an approach how to compute the vanishing line using the circles and their respective center. Then the camera intrinsic parameters were computed by the theory of vanishing line and circular points. The template used in the paper was a planar template, which contained any three plane circles that were not mutually concentric circles. First, the camera was needed to take pictures of the template at three or more different orientations. Then the image coordinates of the circles and their respective center were extracted from the pictures. From the theory of projective geometry, the utilization of the relationship of the pole and the polar line, formed by the center of a circle and the vanishing, solved three simple linear equations so as to obtain the vanishing line. The center of a circle and the vanishing line was proved to be the relationship of the pole and the polar line, from which three simple linear equations were gotten. Then the vanishing line could be computed by the three equations. In the end, the camera intrinsic parameters were gotten by the properties of the circular points. The principle of the approach was simple and equipment on the requirement was low, so it was very suitable for the non-professionals.

Many fundamental problems in materials science, physics, and particular nanotechnology rely on the direct determination and characterization of atomic arrangements and electronic environments of individual interfaces or defects. In this paper, we will show how aberration-corrected Z-contrast imaging in combination with electron energy-loss spectroscopy can be used to directly measure the local atomic and electronic structures of dislocation cores in low-angle SrTiO [001] tilt grain boundaries. In particular, we will study two types of dislocation cores in a 3 tilt grain boundary, a pure edge dislocation, and a dissociated dislocation core. While it is energetically favorable for an edge dislocation to dissociate into two partial dislocations in such a low-angle grain boundary, we can find pure edge dislocations that show a higher O vacancy concentration than the dissociated cores. We suggest that the increased oxygen vacancy concentration might help stabilizing the pure edge dislocations in 3° tilt grain boundaries of SrTiO .

  Depth distribution of soil wettability and its correlations with vegetation type, soil texture, and pH were investigated under various land use (cropland, grassland, and forestland) and soil management systems. Wettability was evaluated by contact angle with the Wilhelmy plate method. Water repellency was likely to be present under permanently vegetated land, but less common on tilled agricultural land. It was mostly prevalent in the topsoil, especially in coarse-textured soils, and decreased in the subsoil. However, the depth dependency of wettability could not be derived from the investigated wide range of soils. The correlation and multiple regression analysis revealed that the wettability in repellent soils was affected more by soil organic carbon (SOC) than by soil texture and pH, whereas in wettable soils, soil texture and pH were more effective than SOC. Furthermore, the quality of SOC seemed to be more important in determining wettability than its quantity, as proofed by stronger hydrophobicity under coniferous than under deciduous forestland. Soil management had a minor effect on wettability if conventional and conservation tillage or different grazing intensities were considered.

  Severe graft rejection remains an important obstacle in intestinal transplantation. In this study, dendritic cells (DCs) isolated from rat bone marrow were cultured for 5 days, and triptolide applied for 3 more days. The recipient rats were pretreated with donor triptolide-modified or not modified DC. Small bowel transplantation was performed to observed survival times. We demonstrated that triptolide markedly inhibited both the expression of CD80 and MHCII expression on DCs. Triptolide-modified DCs stimulated lower proliferative responses among allogeneic T cells, prolonging the survival of intestinal allografts in rats. These results suggested that pretreatment with triptolide-modified DC prolonged the survival of rat small bowel allografts after transplantation.
