In this study, a chemically modified homo zwitterionic polysaccharide (ZPS), sulfated chitosan, was used to examine its effects on murine immune response. The results showed that homoZPS could markedly promote the proliferation of both splenic T/B cells and adhesive cells. In particular, flow cytometry assay demonstrated that the sulfated chitosan could non-specifically activate CD3+ and CD8+ T cells proliferation in vitro. The effectiveness of sulfated chitosan as adjuvant was tested using bovine serum albumin (BSA) and diphtheria toxin (DT) as antigens and compared with that of aluminum hydroxide. The levels of specific antibodies to BSA and DT significantly increased after homoZPS vaccination. Both homoZPS and aluminum hydroxide adjuvants could protect mice against the attack of DT from edemas of spleen and tail. The present findings demonstrated the chemically derived homoZPS could be a potential candidate in the development of T-lymphocyte dependent vaccine adjuvants.

Aims

To examine the relationship of self-reported diabetes, and of random blood glucose levels among individuals without known diabetes, with the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Chinese adults.

Methods

We examined cross-sectional data from the China Kadoorie Biobank of 0.5 million people aged 30-79 years recruited from 10 diverse regions of China in the period 2004-2008. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios of prevalent cardiovascular disease associated with self-reported diabetes, and with measured random blood glucose levels among participants with no history of diabetes, adjusting simultaneously for age, sex, area, education, smoking, alcohol, blood pressure and physical activity.

Results

A total of 3.2% of participants had self-reported diabetes (men 2.9%; women 3.3%) and 2.8% had screen-detected diabetes (men 2.6%; women 2.8%), i.e. they had no self-reported history of diabetes but a blood glucose level suggestive of a diagnosis of diabetes. Compared with individuals without a history of diabetes, the odds ratios associated with self-reported diabetes were 2.18 (95% CI 2.06-2.30) and 1.88 (95% CI 1.75-2.01) for prevalent ischaemic heart disease and stroke/transient ischaemic attack, respectively. Among participants without self-reported diabetes there was a positive association between random blood glucose and ischaemic heart disease and stroke/transient ischaemic attack prevalence (P for trend <0.0001). Below the diabetic threshold (<11.1 mmol/l) each additional 1 mmol/l of random blood glucose was associated with 4% (95% CI 2-5%) and 5% (95% CI 3-7%) higher odds of prevalent ischaemic heart disease and stroke/transient ischaemic attack, respectively.

Conclusions

In this adult Chinese population, self-reported diabetes was associated with a doubling of the odds of prevalent cardiovascular disease. Below the threshold for diabetes there was still a modest, positive association between random blood glucose and prevalent cardiovascular disease.

  The performance of WPM over the mobile satellite channel is presented and analyzed. The theory analysis and the simulation results show that the orthogonality of WPM can help the system be robust to the multipath effect and the extend period of WPM symbols can decrease the frequency selective fading of the system. The simulation result demonstrates that the performance of mobile satellite communication system using WPM is dependent on the support length of the wavelets, therefore a ratio decreasing algorithm is proposed in this study to improve the performance by weakening the support length effect. The simulation result shows that the better performance can be achieved by using proposed method.

  Objective

Nuclear factor-B (NF-B) activation has been identified in a variety of solid tumors and lymphoid malignancies. The aim of our study was to determine the expression status and clinical significance of NF-B in extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type.

Methods

Tumor specimens from 23 patients with previously untreated NK/T-cell lymphoma initially treated with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin and prednisone (CHOP) or CHOP-based chemotherapy were examined by immunohistochemistry for three NF-B subunits (p65, p50 and p52), which are involved in either the canonical or alternative pathway.

Results

None of the cases could be detected with p65 or p50 nuclear staining. On the other hand, 15 (65.2%) cases had p52 nuclear staining, suggesting NF-B activation through the alternative pathway. All major clinical characteristics were balanced between NF-B p52-positive and -negative patients. The objective response rate achieved in NF-B-positive patients was significantly lower than that in negative patients (33.3% vs. 87.5%, P = 0.027). At a median follow-up of 25 months, 8 (53.3%) of 15 NF-B-positive patients had died compared with none of 8 NF-B-negative patients (P = 0.041). In a multivariate analysis, NF-B status and stage were identified to be independent prognostic factors.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that NF-B activation through the alternative pathway is frequently observed in NK/T-cell lymphoma and associated with chemoresistance and poor survival.
