Platinum-based chemotherapeutics are the most common regimens for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, it is difficult to identify platinum resistance in clinical treatment. Genetic factors are thought to represent important determinants of drug efficacy. In this study, we investigated whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in human mutS homolog 2 (hMSH2) and the human mutL homolog 1 (hMLH1) were associated with the tumor response in advanced NSCLC patients received platinum-based chemotherapy in Chinese population. Totally, 96 patients with advanced NSCLC were routinely treated with cisplatin- or carboplatin-based chemotherapy. The three-dimensional (3D), polyacrylamide gel-based DNA microarray method was used to evaluate the genotypes of hMSH2 gIVS12-6T/C and hMLH1-1151T/A with peripheral lymphocytes. We found that there was a significantly increased chance of treatment response to platinum-based chemotherapy with the hMSH2 gIVS12-6T/C polymorphism. The 3D polyacrylamide gel-based DNA microarray method is accurate, high-throughput, and inexpensive, especially suitable for a large scale of SNP genotyping in population.

The -calculus is a process algebra where agents interact by sending communication links to each other via noiseless communication channels. Taking into account the reality of noisy channels, an extension of the -calculus, called the N-calculus, has been introduced recently. This paper presents an early transitional semantics of the N-calculus, which is not a directly translated version of the late semantics of N, and then extends six kinds of behavioral equivalences consisting of reduction bisimilarity, barbed bisimilarity, barbed equivalence, barbed congruence, bisimilarity and full bisimilarity into the N-calculus. Such behavioral equivalences are cast in a hierarchy, which is helpful to verify behavioral equivalence of two agents. In particular, this paper shows that due to the noisy nature of channels, the coincidence of bisimilarity and barbed equivalence, as well as the coincidence of full bisimilarity and barbed congruence, in the -calculus does not hold in N.

Pluripotency associated transcription factor, SAL-Like 4 (SALL4), might play an important role in conferring totipotency on oocytes. In the present study, we screened SALL4 coding regions for mutations in 100 Han Chinese women with non-syndromic ovarian failure and discovered two novel non-synonymous variants in the SALL4 gene: c.541G>A (p.Val181Met) and c.2449A>G. (p.Thr817Ala). The former variant was located in an evolutionary conserved region of SALL4 protein and might affect its function. This is the first report to suggest that SALL4 might be a potential candidate gene of premature ovarian failure.
