  Successful synthesis of room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors, Cu-codoped ZnCoO films are obtained by sol–gel method. It is found that the essential ingredient in achieving room-temperature ferromagnetism is Cu-codoping. By Hall-effect measurement a p-type conductivity was observed for the Cu-codoped films, the hole concentration increases with the increase in Cu concentration. XPS result confirmed Cu ions are univalent in the films, which induced the room-temperature ferromagnetism.

  Studies were conducted to evaluate the FDA and USDA-approved Cecure® antimicrobial in a post-immersion chill drench application in four broiler processing facilities. Control and Cecure®-treated carcasses were collected and stored on-site under typical commercial refrigerated storage conditions. On the day of treatment and on subsequent storage days, log10 APC (CFU/mL) were enumerated on control and Cecure®-treated carcasses. In three of the four plants, treatment with Cecure® resulted in a significant reduction in log10 APC of 1.1 to 3.4 CFU/mL on Day 0. In all plants the Cecure® treatment resulted in a slight extension (1 to 2 days) in carcass shelf life at 1 to 7°C. Additionally, in one plant the effect of the Cecure® treatment was evaluated on cut-up poultry parts from Cecure®-treated carcasses. Initial reductions in log10 APC were statistically significant for thighs and boneless, skinless breast meat on Day 0 and slight extensions in product shelf life (1 to 2 days) were noted for wings, thighs, leg quarters, split breasts and boneless, skinless breast meat from Cecure®-treated carcasses. Multiple regression analysis of the slopes of the exponential growth portion (log phase) of the bacterial growth curves for the control and Cecure®-treated carcasses and parts showed no significant difference in the slopes of the growth curves. Thus, any extension in shelf life of Cecure®-treated carcasses or parts was due to initial microbial reductions at the time of treatment, demonstrating no continued technical effect during refrigerated storage.

To investigate the possible role of CD147 and vascular endothelial growth factor in progression and prognosis of acute myeloid leukemia.


Immunohistochemical staining was performed to detect the expression of CD147 and vascular endothelial growth factor in paraffin-embedded sections from 62 bone marrow biopsies obtained from an equal number of patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia.


CD147 and vascular endothelial growth factor expression in the bone marrow of acute myeloid leukemia patients were significantly higher than those in normal controls (both P < 0.001). Expression of them was significantly increased in patients with a high degree of microvessel density compared with those with a low degree (CD147: P = 0.009; vascular endothelial growth factor: P = 0.01) and correlated well with bone marrow microvessel density (CD147: P = 0.01; vascular endothelial growth factor: P = 0.02). In addition, higher levels of CD147 and vascular endothelial growth factor were also found in acute myeloid leukemia patients with an unfavorable karyotype compared with those with intermediate and favorable karyotypes (both P = 0.01). Moreover, the expression of CD147 was significantly correlated with that of vascular endothelial growth factor (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the co-expression of CD147 and vascular endothelial growth factor in the bone marrow indicated a poor prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia and was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival by multivariate analysis.


Our data show for the first time that the co-expression of CD147 and vascular endothelial growth factor may indicate a poor prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia and may be a highly sensitive marker for predicting the clinical outcome of patients.

  Tibetan chicken is one of those chicken breeds that could adapt to high altitude and low O2 tension environment; it owes an integrative genetic mechanism for hypoxia adaptability compared to lowland chicken breeds. HIF-1α and HIF-2α are the central factors playing important roles in maintaining organisms’s oxygen homeostasis. In this study, the expression of HIF-1α and HIF-2α genes were investigated by Real Time-PCR in Tibetan chicken and Dwarf chicken embryo brain tissue under normoxia (21% oxygen concentration) and hypoxia (13% oxygen concentration). The results showed that Tibetan chicken always had lower mortality than Dwarf chicken during the incubation. We also detected higher HIF-αs expression at the late of incubation (18th day) compared with that at 12th day in all tested samples; we further obtained the expression pattern of HIF-αs genes in dead embryos was opposite to that in live embryos.
