  The study was conducted to examine the effect of set size on bolting, bulb yield and quality in onion cultivar ‘Phulkara’ during autumn season 2001. Highest percentage of bolting (31.1 %) and doubles (69.4 %) was recorded in large sets of 29 mm diameter. In large size sets (29 mm diameter) bulbs matured in minimum time (134.5 days). Highest marketable bulb yield (26 t ha-1) was obtained with 17 mm diameter set followed by 20 and 23 mm diameter yielding 22.9 and 20.0 t ha-1, respectively. Large size sets (26 and 29 mm diameter) produced significantly higher un-marketable bulb yield of 13.9 and 14.9 t ha-1, respectively.

  The performance of eight tomato hybrids was studied under plastic tunnel for number of days to flowering and maturity, number and weight of fruit per plant, single fruit weight and yield. The sequential pickings in tomato hybrids started in second week of December 1991 and finished in the last week of March 1992. The cultivars parana and turquesa matured earlier taking 95.25 and 98.75 days, respectively. The cultivar turquesa with maximum fruit weight plant-1 exhibited the highest yield of 20.45 kg m-2 followed by fortara, royesta and jacinto yielding 19.55, 18.92 and 18.30 kg m-2, respectively.

  Eighteen lines/varieties of Brassica juncea L. were evaluated for plant height, number of branches plant-1, Number of siliquas plant-1, 1000 seed weight and seed yield plant-1 through PCV, GCV, h2, G.A., correlations and path coefficient analysis. Number of siliquas plant-1 found strong parameter followed by number of branches and Plant height for seed yield improvement. Siliquas plant-1 had highest GCV, h2, G.A., highly significant positive correlation and maximum direct contribution for seed yield followed by number of branches plant-1 and plant height.

  The study was undertaken to determine the effect of three row spacings viz. 30, 45 and 60 cm on the yield and quality of two sesame varieties i.e 92001 and TS 3.The results showed that maximum seed yield (0.7147 t ha-1) was obtained with 30 cm row spacing and variety TS 3 gave about 110 % more seed yield and 1.37 % more oil content than variety 92001.

  Eight pea cultivars namely, lincoln, napolitano, piccolo, P. alberto, caravella, rondo, S. gennaro and climax were evaluated for their performance with regard to seed yield. Cultivar rando produced the maximum number of pods (18.8), while caravella produced the minimum number of pods (8.8) per plant. The maximum 1000-seed weight was recorded in S. gennaro (319.0 g) followed by caravella (286.3 g), piccolo (274.3 g) and napolitano (271.7 g). The seed yield in various cultivars ranged from 1.43 to 1.91.

  An experiment was designed to study the morphological and yield behavior of nine exotic and one local cultivar of tomato under Islamabad conditions. Characters studied were time required to flowering, fruit setting, fruit ripening, yield/plant and yield ha-1. Significant difference in the parameters except days to maturity were observed which could be attributed to inherited differences among cultivars. Cultivar marmande (TMV) took significantly minimum time (65.0 days) to ripen followed by S. marzano which ripened in 72.3 days. Cultivar polefemo ripened late (91.7 days) followed by marmande which took 88.7 days to ripen. Cultivars marmande TMV and marmande out yielded other cultivars with 64.29 and 62.99 t ha-1, respectively while poor yield was obtained in S. marzano (14.90 t ha-1).

  The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement and three replications to evaluate the effect of different planting patterns viz. 60-cm spaced single rows, 70-cm spaced single rows, 30/90 cm spaced double row and 35/105-cm spaced double rows on yield and quality of tow maize hybrids viz. `Highcorn 11` and `Cargil 777`. Max-1000 grain weight (438.47 g), grain yield (9.6 t/ha), and stover yield (15.85 t/ha) was recorded when Highcorn 1 1 was sown at 60 cm spaced single rows. While maximum no of grains/cob (372.45) was recorded from `Cargil 777` sown at 30/90 cm apart double row.

  120 Kda and 70 Kda protein in the larval midgut membrane of the lepidopteran Helicoverpa armigera identified as putative receptor for Bt Cry 1Ac delta-endotoxin .Receptor proteins have been purified by a combination of gel-filtration and anion exchange chromatography .In ligand-blotting experiment ,the purified protein has binding capacity with Cry 1Ac and Cry 1Ab but not to Cry 2A .N-terminal sequence obtained from the protein show no homology to already existing sequences .When assayed for amino-peptidase and alkaline phosphatase activities , purified receptors preparations were enriched 2.5 fold in amino-peptidase activity compare to Helicoverpa-armigera brush border membrane vesicles . The 70 Kda protein seems to be the part of 120 Kda receptor protein.

  Ten cultivars of tomato were evaluated on the basis of days to flowering, fruit setting and maturity period, number and weight of fruit per plant, length and width of fruit, average fruit weight, plant height and yield. The cultivars Nova Mech, Early Mech, Chico III, Nadir, Tanja and Sorrento were early in maturity whereas `Samarzano` was a late maturing. The cultivar Tanja produced maximum fruit weight per plant (1.55 Kg) and gave the highest yield of 41.45 t /ha . It was followed by Chico-III and Sorrento which exhibited average yields of 40.32 and 39.13 t/ha respectively.

  Interrelationships between grain yield and its components were determined by genotypic correlation and path co-efficient analysis in eighteen maize lines/hybrids. The results indicated that grain yield was positively and significantly associated with all parameters studied. The results also showed that number of kernels row‾1 has maximum positive direct effect on grain yield. It was followed by 1000-kernel weight, ear length and number of rows ear‾1. Ear height had negative direct effect on grain yield. It was concluded that number of kernels row‾1, 1000-kernel weight, ear length and number of rows ear‾1 were the main yield components.

  The interactive effect of varying levels of phosphorus viz. 75, 100 and 125 kg/ha with that of potassium viz. 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha on the growth and yield of hybrid maize "Shahensha" was studied at the agronomic research area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during the year 1997. The results revealed that the highest grain yield of 6.02 t/ha and thousand grain weight 405.2 g respectively were obtained from the plot fertilized at the rate of 125-75 PK kg/ha against the lowest grain yield (4.20 t/ha) and 1000 grain weight (372.4 g) were obtained from the control plots. This increase in grain yield was attributed to increased leaf area per plant, greater cob length, increased number of grains per cob and the heavier grain weight.

  The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications keeping a net plot size of 3.5 x 7.5 m to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and sulphur on growth, yield and quality of hybrid maize (cargill-707). Application of fertilizer at 150±30 and 150+20 kg N and S per hectare, respectively greatly increased dry weight per plant, No. of grains per cob and grain weight per cob over other treatments, Similarly, highest grain yield of 8.59 tones per hectare was recorded from plot fertilized at 150 kg N and 30 kg S per hectare. While maximum grain oil and crude protein contents were recorded from plot fertilized at 150+30 and 150 20 kg N and S per hectare, respectively.

  Eight crosses of maize viz; F-103 x F-105, F-105 x F-103, F-113 x F-107, F-107 x F-113, F-138 x F-131, F-131 x F-138, F-147 x F-132, F-132 x F-147 were made. These crosses (F1) alongwith their parents were planted to study the heterosis for plant height (cm), ear height (cm), ear length (cm), ear diameter (cm), number of rows ear‾1, number of kernels row‾1, 1000-kernels weight (g) and yield plant‾1 (g) in F1 generation. It was concluded that a cross F-113 x F-107 showed maximum heterosis for yield and its components. Therefore this combination must be given due consideration to utilize for improving yield and its components in future breeding programme.
