  This study was conducted to determine the normal values of haematological parameters in adult dry, lactating and camel calves. The Hb, PCV, RBC, MCV, MCH and MCHC were lowest in young camels (3-12 weeks old). The above values were generally lower in lactating females as compared to adult dry females. The TLC was highest in young camels and lowest in lactating females. The DLC revealed that the neutrophils were the most predominant cells, followed by the lymphocytes, the eosinophils, the monocytes and finally the basophiis. However, statistical analysis of the DLC showed no significant differences between the three groups, with the except of the eosinophils which were significantly lower (p<0.05) in young camels.

  The investigation of the effects of intravenous (i.v.) infusion of α2-adrenoreceptor agonists and antagonists on reticuloruminal motility was carried out in conscious goats. The i.v. administration of the α1-agonist phenylephrine (4 μg kg–1 min–1 for 15 min) or the α2-agonist naphazoline (2.5 μg kg–1 min–1 for 15 min) reduced both frequency and amplitude of reticulum and rumen dorsal sac contractions. Pretreatment of animals with the α1-antagonist prazosin (20 μg kg–1 min–1 for 30 min) prevented the inhibitory effects of phenylephrine on reticuloruminal motility. The effects of naphazoline were prevented by yohimbine, an α2-antagonist at 20 μg kg–1 min–1 for 30 min. Yohimbine, given alone or followed by naphazoline, abolished secondary ruminal dorsal sac contractions. It is concluded that both α12 and α2-adrenoreceptors are involved in the regulation of reticuloruminal motility in the goat. At the dosage of drugs used al and α2-adrenoreceptors appear to play an inhibitory effect on reticuloruminal motility in the goat.

  The activities of enzymes of clinical significance and the concentrations of certain electrolytes, minerals and blood constituents were determined in sera of she-camels, cows and ewes. The activities of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and gamm-glutamyltransferase were measured. The concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, iron, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, creatinine, total protein and albumin were determined. Means were compared by performing Duncon`s Multiple Range Test. The results were compared with those reported by other investigators in camels, cattle and sheep.
