  Body weight and body linear measurement (Diagonal body length, Height-at-withers, sac pelvic width, Heart girth) of 259 West African Dwarf (WAD) goats (both sexes) in three age groups (Kid, yearling and Adult) were measured. The least square means for body weight were 6.40, 10.5 and 18.9 kg for kid, yearling and Adult respectively. Means of other body linear measurements also vary within each age group. The variables measured vary positively with age of the animals and the correlations of body weight with diagonal body length, Height at whither, sac-pelvic width and heart girth were high, positive and significant (p<0.01). There is sexual dimorphism in body weight and other body linear measurements in favour of the female goats. The correlation matrix of each of the variable or combination could be used in predicting live weight of the animals.

  A site week feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of varying levels of castor fruit meal (CFM) on 40-week old Shavers 579 strains layers. Sixty-four layers were allotted to four dietary treatments, 1,23 and 4 which contained 0, 3.5, 7.0 and 14% castor fruit meal respectively. Layers in group (control diet) was significantly better (p<0.05) than the rest fed other diets in feed intake, hen-day production, egg weight, egg mass output and feed conversion efficiency. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) among the four dietary treatments in body weight, egg index, yolk percentage, albumen percentage, shell thickness and Haugh units. This study reveals that the inclusion of CFM in the diet of layers has adverse effects on their performance characteristics that are valued by poultry operators.

  Egg laying performance of 120 pullets sired by four different strains- three Nigerian indigenous (Naked-neck, Frizzle feathered and Normal feathered) and one exotic (White Leghorn) was studied over an 18-week period. The traits considered were egg number and egg weight. Sire genotype significantly (P < 0.05) affected mean egg number and egg weight while season had no significant effect (P > 0.05). Frizzle feathered progeny laid more eggs (4.61± 0.27 - 6.25±0.35) comparable to the progeny of White Leghorn while Naked neck progeny laid heavier eggs (44.26±1.12gm - 47.76±1.41gm). Estimate of heritabilities (h2s) was low for egg number (h2s = 0.07) and moderate ((h2s = 0.31) for egg weight (genotypes combined). Negatively low genetic and phenotypic correlations were recorded between egg number and egg weight. This study therefore revealed the existence of genetic variability and potentials for genetic improvement in egg traits amongst the Nigerian local chickens.

  A total of 357 progenies (both sexes) produced by 23 sires belonging to 4 sire strains; 3 Nigerian indigenous (Naked-Neck, Frizzle and Normal) and an exotic purebred (White Leghorn) chickens were evaluated for growth traits at day-old, 4, 8, 16 and 20 weeks of age. The growth traits measured were body weight (BDW), body length (BDL), Breast Girth (BG) and Keel Length (KL). Sire genotypes significantly (p<0.05) affected BDW, BDL, BG and KL at all ages except at first week of age for breast girth (p>0.05). Significant differences were also recorded for sex for each of the growth traits at different ages (p<0.05). Progenies of Naked Neck sire were generally superior in BDW followed by Frizzle, Normal and White Leghorn progenies. Male progenies were significantly (p<0.05) heavier and possess higher linear body measurements than their female counterpart in all age except KL at day-old and 20 week of age. The significance (p<0.05) of sire x sex interactions on growth traits varied with age. This study revealed the existence of genetic variations and potential for improvement amongst the Nigerian local chickens.
