  The efficiency of pre-emergence herbicide, post-emergence herbicide and hand weeding alone as well as in combination with farm yard manure (FYM) were studied in potato for three years. The emergence percentage was at the top (84.6) where pre-emergence herbicide was sprayed and FYM was not added followed by (84.3) hand weeding in which FYM was used. The uncontrolled weed plots gave an average of 535.8 g m‾2 more fresh weeds weight than weeds controlled plots. The hand weeding plots gave an average of 58.9 g m‾2 more fresh weeds weight than chemically weed controlled plots. The pre-emergence herbicide controlled plots yielded an average of 111.1 g m‾2 more fresh weeds weight as compared to post-emergence herbicide controlled plots. The percentage of > 55 mm tubers was at the top (55.1) where post-emergence herbicide was sprayed and FYM was added followed by (50.2%) pre-emergence herbicide treated plots in which FYM was not added. The seed size (35-55 mm) tuber percentage was at the top (41.1) where weeds were not eradicated and FYM was not added followed by (40.8%) hand weeding plots in which FYM was added. The percentage of <35 mm tubers was at the bottom (11.2 ) where pre-emergence herbicide was sprayed and FYM was added. Weeds control by any methods increased potato yield an average of 7.983 t ha‾1 (27.52%) than the uncontrolled weeds plots. The FYM increased an average of 3.687 t ha‾1 (10.49%) yield in potato as compared to plots in which FYM was not applied. The chemically weed controlled methods produced an average of 4.482 t ha‾1 (13.18%) more potatoes than hand weeding. The post-emergence herbicide, on an average basis yielded more potatoes than pre-emergence herbicide. The difference was 3.355 t ha‾1 (9.11%) in the favour of post-emergence herbicide. On the basis of three years results post-emergence herbicide is recommended for effective weeds control and higher production.

  Three different experiments were conducted for three years to develop true potato seed (TPS) mini tuber production technology in the country. In three year average data the germination percentage (71.9%), number of tubers per meter square (334.2) and yield of seeding tubers/m2 (2841.1 g) was at the top when TPS was soaked 24 h before sowing. The lowest germination percentage (38.8%), tubers number/m2 (270.5) and yield of seedling tubers/m2 (853.9 g) was obtained in dry sowing. The 24 h soaking gave an average of 85.3%, 18 h soaking yielded 72.4%, 30 h soaking produce 35.1% and 12 h soaking gave 18.3% more germination than dry sowing. The 24 h soaking produce 23.5%, 18 h soaking gave 19.9%, 30 h soaking yielded 13.2% and 12 h soaking gave 4.8% more numbers of seedling tubers/m2 than dry sowing. On the average basis 24 h soaking produced 232.7%, 18 h soaking gave 130.8%, 30 h soaking yielded 119.7% and 12 h soaking produced 23.6% more seedling tuber weight/m2 than dry sowing. Germination percentage (73.9%) and number of tubers per meter square (483) were at the top in 15th October sown plot where as maximum seedling tuber /m2 (2785.6 g) was yielded by the 1st October sown crop. The lowest germination percentage (27.9%) and tuber number/m2 (222.3) were obtained in the 15th September sown crop where as the lowest yield of seedling tubers/m2 was produced by the Ist. November sown plots (1822.2 g). Maximum germination percentage (79.8%), seedling tubers/m2 (326.1) and yield of seedling tubers/m2 (1835 g) was obtained in plot where soil and leaf manure was mixed in 1:1 ratio, where as minimum germination percentage (41.6%), seedling tubers/m2 (254.3) and yield of seedling tubers/m2 (684 g) was recorded where TPS was sown in simple soil. On an average basis from three years data soil + leaf manure (1:1) media produced 168.3%, soil + FYM (1:1) media gave 84.6% and soil + silt (1:1) media yielded 31.3% more seedling tuber weight/m2 than simple soil sown plots. Hence TPS sowing in Punjab is recommended on 15th October and onward. and soaking of TPS is recommended for 18 to 24 h before sowing . The sowing of TPS is recommended in Soil + leaf manure or soil + FYM in 1:1 ratio. These recommendations not only improve germination and number of seedling tuber/m2 but also the weight of seedling tubers per unit area too.

  Line X tester analysis, involving five lines and three testers were made in potato for five parameters. The variances due to GCA and SCA showed that the gene action was predominantly additive for stem height and stem plant-1 whereas preponderance of non-additive genetic effect was advocated for dry matter content percentage and specific gravity. Both additive and non-additive generic interaction was important for yield of potatoes. The line Diamant was best general combiner for the characters like stem plant-1 and yield of potatoes ha-1 whereas line Bartina was the best general combiner for main stem height and specific gravity. However Desiree proved to be the best general combiner as far as dry matter content is concerned. The tester Cardinal proved the best general combiner for all the characters under study. The specific combining ability effects were the highest in the cross Hydra X Cardinal for stem height. Whereas, for stems plant-1 and dry matter content percentage, the cross Bartina X Cardinal surpassed rest of the crosses. The cross Diamant X Kondor manifested the excellent specific combining ability value for yield of potato ha-1. The best general combining ability parent when utilized in cross combinations as one of the parents produced good combinations in main stem height, number of stem Plant-1, dry matter content and yield of potatoes ha-1. This suggests additive X additive or additive X dominance gene interaction for these traits. The cross Hydra and Multa gave the best SCA effect for specific gravity having both the parents with low GCA effect hence suggested non-additive i.e., dominance and epastatic type of gene action for this character. Recurrent selection with progeny testing is contemplated for improving the tuber yield in potato.
