  This study was conducted to determine the effect of propagule weight and nitrogen fertilizer rates on growth and yield of pineapple in southwestern Nigeria. Pineapple whole stump were collected from the Teaching and Research Farm, University of Ado-Ekiti which were split into three different weights viz: Short Weight (SW), Medium Weight (MW) and Large Weight (LW). Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at 0, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1. Treatments were arranged in a split plot design with propagule weight as the main plot factor and N rates as sub-plot factor. The results indicated a significant (p<0.05) increase in length of D leaf, number of leaves, root length and days to 50% sprouting. Optimum fruit yield 210.03 MT ha-1 was obtained at 150 kg N ha-1. Large weight propagules gave significant increase in yield and yield components except fruit weight, fruit diameter and fruit length which were not significant.

  The effect of Broiler litter and NPK 15-15-15 fertilizers on soil properties, growth and yield of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) were investigated at the Teaching and Research Farm, University of Ado-Ekiti and a farmer`s field at Omuo Ekiti (Southern guinea savannah soil), Nigeria. The treatments consisted of 0, 2, 4 MT ha-1 Broiler litter (Poultry manure) and 150 kg ha-1 NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer. The results indicated a significant increase in growth parameters in those plants planted in NPK 15-15-15 fertilized plot than poultry manure plot. However, growth parameters (plant height, stem girth and number of leaves) were increased significantly (p<0.05) as manure rates increased. Poultry manure at 4 MT ha-1 gave significant increase in fruit yield of okra in both location leading to 20.1 and 14.6% increase, respectively for Ado-Ekiti and Omuo Ekiti over the unfertilized plot (control). Leaf nutrient content was also increase with increasing rates of poultry manure.

  Subsidy withdrawal is an instrument of the on-going liberalization in the fertilizer sector. The effects on rising fertilizer retail prices were evaluated on the profitability of nitrogen (N) application to egusi, okra and tomato, using Cost-Benefit analysis. Returns to N application were positive at the 1996 highly-subsidized fertilizer prices, with highest Value-Cost Ratios (VCRs) at 30, 50 and 60 kg N ha-1 for tomato, egusi and okra, respectively. Without subsidy, net returns and VCRs decreased, such that N application to egusi was not profitable. At the higher subsidized and unsubsidized fertilizer prices in the 2004/2005 season, N application to okra and tomato was profitable. Returns and VCRs confirmed 30 and 60 kg N ha-1 as economic rates for tomato and okra, respectively. Okra and tomato will accommodate 24 and 385% increase in price, respectively, above the unsubsidized N2900.00 per 50 kg bag, based on target VCR = 2.0.
