  Nitric oxide is synthesized by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase. Nitric oxide synthase maintains the normal levels of nitric oxide in body. Discovery of nitric oxide synthase has lead to a new era in the drug research. Nitric oxide regulates the normal physiological balance and functions of the body. Three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase have been identified, an endothelial type, a neuronal type and a macrophage (inducible) type. Nitric oxide helps in regularizing normal blood pressure, relaxation of smooth muscle, release of growth hormone, insulin and pancreatic polypeptide. Nitric oxide plays very important role in host defense mechanism of body. Studies have shown that excess or deficiency of nitric oxideis associated with many diseases. In spite of the involvement of NO in several physiological functions, overproduction of NO can be harmful. An excess of NO produced by nNOS or iNOS is involved in pathological conditions, including post-ischemic stroke damage, septic shock, seizures, schizophrenia, migraine headaches, Alzheimer`s disease, development of colitis, tissue damage and inflammation, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, depression, neuroimmune diseases. In this study we have taken review of the important role of nitric oxide in biological system and the strategies to inhibit the overproduction of nitric oxide.

  Dry roots of the plant Piper longum were extracted with n-hexane. The constituents were isolated and purified by column chromatography. The structures of the isolated constituents were confirmed by spectral analysis. The isolated constituents and n-hexane extract were found to show varying degree of antibacterial activity against all the tested bacteria. However, the aqueous extract did not show antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria. The isolated constituents were found to show better activity profile than the n-hexane extract, which indicates that the isolated constituents might be responsible for the antibacterial activity. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of piperine against Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli was found to be 12.5 mg mL-1.

  The resistance of different bacteria to the current antibacterial agents, toxicity of the antibacterial agents and the cost of the treatment has led to the development of new active molecules against the bacteria. Since ancient times medicinal plants have been used for the treatment of bacterial infections. The roots of the plant Inula racemosa has been used as folk medicine in East Asia and Europe. However, no systematic data is available on the antibacterial activity profile of the different constituents of Inula racemosa. In the present studies, attempt has been made for isolation of root constituents of Inula racemosa (Compositae) and evaluation of its antibacterial activity. The constituents were isolated and purified by column chromatography. The structure of the isolated constituents were confirmed by spectral analysis and were used for the determination of the antibacterial activity of Inula racemosa against various microorganisms. The constituent alantolactone showed maximum antibacterial activity as compared to other constituents and ethyl acetate extract of the roots.

  Extract of the plant Piper longum Linn (Family: Piperaceae) is used as folk medicine in India and China. Roots of the plant Piper longum are reported for the treatment of heart diseases in ancient literature of East Asia. However, no data is available on exact role of fractions of plant in heart diseases. In the present study we have isolated four major fractions namely F, G, H and I and the activity of the fractions was studied on isolated frog heart. Fraction F has produced negative inotropic and negative chronotropic effect on isolated frog heart at 200 μg mL-1. Fraction F shows maximum antagonistic activity on beta-receptors by decreasing heart rate and force of contraction. Actions of Adrenaline are blocked by fraction F and in the presence of propanolol, it shows continuous decrease in heart rate and force of contraction. In the present study, it was observed that fraction F shows antagonistic activity on beta adreno-receptors.
