  We present our first results from laboratory experiments on a binary-shaped checkerboard mask coronagraph that was fitted inside a vacuum chamber for the development of skills to the direct observation of extra-solar planets. The aim of this work was to utilize a vacuum chamber for our coronagraph experiments in order to achieve an environment with higher thermal stability and which is free from air turbulence. We also aimed to evaluate and improve the performance of such a system consisting of a vacuum chamber with a coronagraph set inside the chamber. Both the raw contrast and the contrast after point spread function (PSF) subtraction are evaluated. We sited the vacuum chamber in a clean room, and we installed an optical fiber coupled to a visible He–Ne laser, appropriate coronagraph optics, a temperature sensor and heaters in the chamber. This provided a vacuum environment and a temperature-controlled environment with a visible light source, and was shown to improve the stability of the coronagraph. A contrast of 1.7x10-7 was achieved for the raw coronagraphic images by analyzing the areal mean of all of the observed dark regions. A contrast of 7.3x10-9 was achieved for the PSF subtraction by areal variance (1σ) of all of the observed dark regions. Speckles were a major limiting factor throughout the dark regions of both the raw images and the PSF subtracted images. The application of PSF subtraction for the Space Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) and for other platforms is discussed.

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) was prevented from recurring in 2 children by sodium cromoglycate (SCG) before intake of the causative food. Case 1: A 14-year-old girl who had suffered recurrent symptoms of anaphylaxis when she exercised after lunch. Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) was 1.49 UA/mL for wheat. She was advised to take SCG before lunch. In 2007, she ate bread at lunchtime without taking SCG and developed anaphylaxis. After this, she always took SCG and did not develop anaphylaxis. Case 2: A 9-year-old boy who had recurrent symptoms of anaphylaxis when he exercised after lunch. RAST was 0.46 UA/mL for wheat. He started taking SCG before lunch. In June 2008, he forgot to take SCG and ate fu (a food made from wheat). He exercised after lunch and developed anaphylaxis. Since then, he has always taken SCG and has not developed anaphylaxis. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that SCG prevents FDEIA caused by wheat allergy.

  A study was conducted in the rehabilitation of degraded forestland in the Bukit Kinta Forest Reserve, Perak, Peninsular Malaysia with two main objectives: (1) to assess the growth performance of two indigenous dipterocarp species, Shorea pauciflora (King) and S. macroptera (Dyer) planted under various line planting widths and gap planting openings and (2) to examine soil fertility status and site quality of the study area using two indices; Soil Fertility Index (SFI) and Soil Evaluation Factor (SEF), which are commonly used for estimating soil fertility of secondary forest in humid tropical regions. The survival rate of the two species was not affected by line planting width and gap planting opening. However, its effect on the tree growth was very clear probably due to preference of light intensity under the canopy, which in turn can be controlled by line planting widths and gap planting openings. Principal component analysis categorized the soil properties into three principal components which explained 70% of the total variation. The First Component Score (PC1) was related to cation retention capacity with a high contribution of soil organic matter. The linear regression analysis indicated that there were positive correlations between PC1 score and the proposed SFI and SEF for both soil depths (p < 0.01). The SFI and SEF were also highly correlated with height, dbh (diameter at breast height) and tree volume, while PC1 score was only correlated with dbh and tree volume for the surface soils. This shows that the SFI and SEF can be used as indices to predict soil fertility and site quality of rehabilitated degraded forestland.

The number of corticotrophs increases in the anterior pituitary (AP) gland in adrenalectomized (AdX) rats. In this study, aimed at identifying the growth factor implicated in this proliferation, we analyzed proteins secreted from a cDNA library of the AP of AdX rats, using the signal sequence trap method. A PCR analysis of several cDNAs that coded for insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP) 5, IGFBP7, and vacuolar H+-ATPase accessory subunit Ac45 revealed an increased and decreased expression level of IGFBP7 mRNA in the AP of AdX rats and AdX rats injected with dexamethasone, respectively. IGFBP7 mRNA was predominately expressed in the corticotrophs of the APs of both sham-operated and AdX rats. The AP of AdX rats contained an increased number of IGFBP7 mRNA–expressing cells and corticotrophs compared with that of sham-operated rats, but the ratio of IGFBP7 mRNA–positive corticotrophs per total number of corticotrophs did not significantly change in either group. Histochemical analysis of labeled proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and sex-determining region Y box-2 (SOX2) revealed the presence of several PCNA-positive signals and the absence of SOX2 cells among the corticotrophs, suggesting that IGFBP7 mRNA–expressing corticotrophs are derived from in situ corticotrophs and that they increase in number as corticotrophs increase. The possible roles of IGFBP7 in the corticotrophs are also discussed. (J Histochem Cytochem 58:969–978, 2010)
