  Analgesic potential of the pet ether (PECB), chloroform (CCB), n-butanol (NBCB) and hydromethanolic (HMCB) fractions of the aerial parts of Commelina benghalensis Linn. was evaluated for centrally acting analgesic property using hotplate and tail immersion method and peripheral pharmacological actions using acetic acid-induced writhing test to scientifically validate some of the folkloric and ethnomedical uses of the plant. All fractions, at the dose of 200 and 400 mg kg-1 b.wt., displayed significant analgesic action in a dose dependent manner in the tested models. In acetic acid-induced writhing test, all extracts exhibited significant (p<0.05) reduction of writhing response in a dose dependent manner; the response decreased in the order Diclofenac-Na (76.16%) > CCB2 (68.8%) > NBCB2 (61.9%) > HMCB2 (52.8%) > PECB2 (48.0%). In hotplate and tail immersion method, all fractions caused a significant (p<0.0-0.001) increase in latency time and the results are comparable to the standard drug Nalbuphine. These results suggest significant analgesic potential of C. benghalensis and thereby justify its traditional uses in various types of pain.

  In this study, we propose a Leverage Based Near-Neighbor (LBNN) method where prior information on the structure of the heteroscedastic error is not required. In the proposed LBNN method, weights are determined not from the near-neighbor values of the explanatory variables, but from their corresponding leverage values so that it can be readily applied to a multiple regression model. Both the empirical and Monte Carlo simulation results show that the LBNN method offers substantial improvement over the existing methods. The LBNN has significantly reduced the standard errors of the estimates and also the standard errors of residuals for both simple and multiple linear regression models. Hence, the LBNN can be established as one reliable alternative approach to other existing methods that deal with heteroscedastic errors when the form of heteroscedasticity is unknown.

  Fluoride, an important aspect of the aquatic ecology influences not only the biological productivity but also the quality of water. Furthermore, quantum of anthropogenic influences and global volcanic activity also exerts an overwhelming effect on the concentration of fluoride in natural waters. Besides, ground water also contains higher concentrations of fluoride owing to leaching from rocks. Surinsar-Mansar ramsar site in NW Himalayas includes two lakes where Lake Mansar is the biggest one and is an only one source of fresh water to support the livelihood and biodiversity of its vicinity. Thus, the contamination in the water or imbalance in the chemistry of the lake has been always proved as the main source of epidemics in the area. Besides drinking facility, the lake provides a heavy flush of water for the agriculture practice and livestock of the area. Since Lake Mansar is a closed lacustrine system receiving water from sub-terranean springs and rains due to western disturbances in sub-continent India, hence the present study was initiated to see the fluctuation in the fluoride concentration in the lake.
