  This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of dried mixture of five herbal plants as natural additives on milk yield and composition of cross bred dairy goats. Thirty lactating goats after two weeks of kidding were divided into 3 groups (ten animals each) using complete random block design to evaluate the effect of herbal mixture supplement on the productivity of lactating goats. Treatment 2 (T2) and treatment 3 (T3) were supplemented with polyherbal combination at the rate of 125 and 250 mg kg-1 body weight, respectively. Goats without polyherbal combination served as Control group (T1). Animals were fed on 40% concentrate feed mixture and green fodder ad libitum. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) was slightly increased for animals fed on T2 ration compared to T1 and T3. Apparent nutrients digestibility and Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) were significantly improved by treatments. Milk yield, 4% Fat Corrected Milk (FCM), milk protein, fat, total solids, feed efficiency (DMI/Milk yield and DMI/4% FCM) and economic efficiency were significantly higher for animals fed T2 followed by T3 and then T1 (control). Glucose contents and Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) were higher in animals which received experimental additives than those received control. Results clearly indicated that combination of herbal supplementation in different treatments recorded the lowest rate of Dry Matter Digestibility (DMD) compared to control group. It may be concluded that adding the combination of polyherbal supplementation to rations improved the productivity of lactating goats with no deleterious effects on general health.

  Various aspects of modified atmosphere packaging for storage of pears in perm-selective polymeric film packages were investigated. The dynamics of respiration-permeation interaction was analyzed with a view to facilitate self establishment of dynamic equilibrium of gaseous composition within the package and external atmospheres at a desired storage condition. By combining different polymeric films, three types of laminated modified atmosphere packages (LF1, LF2, and LF3) were developed. The modified atmosphere packaged pears were found to have retained freshness and quality for a longer period of time. The shelf life of MA packaged pears could be extended approximately 0.75 to 1.5 times in comparison to unpacked pears. The performance of package type LF1 was found to be the best, whereas LF2 was found to be the second best.

  The aim of the present research was to study the effects of a polyherbal supplement on cross bred does, starting from the last month of pregnancy to weaning on milk yield, kid birth weight and growth rate. A total of 30 does were divided into three treatments of ten each in individual pens: Low level Supplementation (LS), High level Supplementation (HS) and Non-Supplemented treatment (NS) as control. Low supplemented goats were given 125 mg kg-1 BW day-1 of polyherbal combination; high supplemented goats were given 250 mg kg-1 BW day-1. The study was carried out in 2008. About 59 kids were born from all the experimental animals based on treatment wise. There was no difference on milk yield between supplemented groups and control (p>0.05) although, polyherbal supplementation had positive effect on litter birth weight and growth rate compared to control. Weaning weights were higher (p<0.001) in LS and HS compare to NS does. In both supplemented treatments compared to control, mortalities and morbidities were also lower in kids born. It is concluded that pre-partum to weaning supplementation increases kids growth rates and weaning weights as well as reduces kid mortalities but it doesn’t have significant effect on milk production.

  In order to evaluate and analyze the effect of samarium (Sm) doping on the resistance of cerium oxide, we have grown highly oriented samaria doped ceria (SDC) thin films on sapphire, Al2O3 (0 0 0 1) substrates by using oxygen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (OPA-MBE). The film growth was monitored using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) which shows two-dimensional growth throughout the deposition. Following growth, the thin films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). XPS depth-profile shows Sm atoms are uniformly distributed in ceria lattice throughout the bulk of the film. The valence states of Ce and Sm in doped thin films are found to be Ce4+ and Sm3+, respectively. HRXRD shows the samaria doped ceria films on Al2O3 (0 0 0 1) exhibit (1 1 1) preferred orientation. Ion-channeling in RBS measurements confirms high quality of the thin films. The resistance of the samaria doped ceria films, obtained by two probe measurement capability under various oxygen pressure (1 mTorr–100 Torr) and temperatures (623–973 K), is significantly lower than that of pure ceria under same conditions. The 6 at.% samaria doped ceria film is the optimum composition for highest conductivity. This is attributed to the increased oxygen vacant sites in fluorite crystal structure of the epitaxial thin films which facilitate faster oxygen diffusion through hopping process.
