  Problem statement: In the Malaysian construction industry, there is a pressing issue of minimizing construction waste, which cause significant impacts on the environment. With the increasing demand for major infrastructure projects, commercial buildings and housing development programmers, a large amount of construction waste is being produced. Adoption of prefabrication and industrialized building systems is now a priority in the industry and also an important means of reducing waste. Approach: Discussion of the prefabrication adoption were based on a comprehensive review of literatures and studies that contained data, information, findings and evidences related to prefabrication and industrial building systems in Malaysia. This study also highlighted a comparative study of material wastage and recycling based on two project sites e.g., conventional and prefabrication construction. Results: In the Malaysia construction industry, adoption of prefabrication and IBS is strongly encouraged to reduce construction time as well as the industry’s dependency on foreign workers. In addition, this study confirms that a huge amount of material wastage can be reduced by the adoption of prefabrication. This study also revealed that the rates of reused and recycled waste materials are relatively higher in projects that adopt prefabrication. Conclusion: Thus, the adoption of prefabrication and IBS has potential in the reduction of huge waste generation and management problems in the construction sector of Malaysia although there are some challenges in the adoption of prefabrication.

  The aim of this study is to highlight contractors` perception on various environmental problems and examine relative importance of each environmental problem as part of an overall construction waste management and environmental strategy for developing appropriate policies in Malaysia. The data in this study is based on contractors registered with construction industry development board (CIDB) of Malaysia and analysed by using mean score model. The findings revealed that contractors are concerned about all components of the environment and perceived the most important environmental problems which are deforestation, water pollution, air pollution and ground water contamination as well as soil erosion. In response to these problems, government and other stakeholders should implement various actions and measures to alleviate environmental problems. In addition, contractors and developers also need to be included environmental protection measures in their construction projects.

  A total of 500 questionnaires were sent to 10 selected faculties and institutes to 300 staffs and 200 students within the university community. The survey response indicates relatively low level of WEEE recycling participation among the surveyed staffs and students at 35 and 19%, respectively. Although, the recycling practice is low, the study indicates that 85% of the staffs and 80% of students surveyed within the university community found it necessary for WEEE to be properly collected and recycled. Majority of them show good repair attitude at 55% for staffs and 53% for students but with poor disposal practices. However, the study reveals the need for increasing awareness of WEEE recycling, not only in the university but also at municipal levels. The study recommends that various offices, university hostels, departments, faculties, institutes and research centers should establish better WEEE recycling and disposal practices to reduce the impact on the ecosystem.

  Dengue infection has become an important and serious public health concern in Malaysia during the past few decades. The disease is predominant in urban areas where majority of the country’s total population resides. However, there is limited research in assessing financial burden of the disease on household in the country. The aim of this study is to quantify financial losses faced by the households due to dengue infection in Seremban district, Malaysia. The study conducted a survey based on personal (i.e., face to face) interview to obtain primary data. A total of 120 dengue patients registered at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban were interviewed by using a standardized questionnaire. The findings revealed that the age-specific incidence rate was highest (25.1%) among the young adult group (i.e., 16-25 years of age) indicating that they are the most vulnerable group to dengue infection. The study found that households spend every month, on average, USD3.92 (MYR12.33) to buy preventive products such as insecticides aerosol spray, mosquito repellent, mosquito coils, mats, etc. Expenses on insecticides aerosol spray constitute the greatest portion (nearly 62%) of the total monthly expenditure for preventive measures. The household’s total average cost of treatment per dengue case was estimated at USD37.26 (MYR118.00). The analyses revealed that 24.10% of the total cost for treatment is attributed to the cost for medical care (USD8.98) which includes expenses on consultation with doctors, diagnosis and medicines. On the other hand, non-medical expenses (i.e., transportation, food, drinks and so on) represent the largest share (nearly 76%) of the total treatment cost. Findings of the study suggest that a single episode of dengue places sizeable financial burden to household, especially in terms of treatment cost. Estimates of costs of dengue at household level are crucial to inform policy-makers about financial burden of the disease and may assist in implementing more effective control strategies to minimize the ongoing burden of the disease in the country.

  The problem of food waste among households in Malaysia is becoming a great concern to the local authorities as enormous amount is spent in disposing food waste. With increased in households income, as a result of good economy in the last two decades and changes in consumption pattern, food waste has grown to alarming figures. Therefore, this study examines food consumption and disposal behaviour among households in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Households were randomly selected from Kajang. Bangi and Serdang with the objective to investigate household food consumption and disposal behaviour so as to achieve sustainable food consumption and food waste management in these areas. Also, what factors influences their consumption and disposal behaviour. Factor Analysis (FA) was used for the empirical analysis. Findings from the result have revealed that over all respondent’s attitudes shows that they do not like to waste their food while some of them prefer to eat freshly cook food both at home and restaurants rather than leftover food. However on the other hand, food waste composting and disposal behaviour is influenced by neighborhood attitude towards disposal.
