  One of the most widely used herbs in Ayurvedic medicine is Phyllanthus amarus, which is predominantly grown in Indian subcontinent. Since, the market surveillance of herbal drugs is reported to contain minimum 0.5% of phyllanthin, demands increased production of this herb, which could be achieved by standard agrotechniques. Moreover, since, it is also desirable to check for the effect of these improved measures on the bioactive compound-phyllanthin, an effort was aimed at investigating a standard strategy to quantify the principle compound. Hence, a detailed investigation was adopted to provide a comparative quantification of phyllanthin through High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) from different organs of P. amarus grown with improved agrotechniques. However, it revealed to be more effective through HPLC especially higher in the leaves as against the analysis through HPTLC.

  The present investigation was aimed at studying the effect of culture filtrates of cyanobacteria (blue green algae) namely Anabaena ambigua Rao and Oscillatoria foreaui Fremi in different soil conditions on the growth of Withania somnifera Dunal in terms of biomass and biochemical characteristics along with active ingredients of the roots. Experiments conducted in field by replenishing the plant rhizosphere as foliar spray with increasing quantities of culture filtrates enhanced the growth of the plant more precisely in sandy loam soil when compared to red soil. The yield potentials of the roots also increased with the culture filtrate of O. foreaui along with the other parameters studied, attributing to the availability of the nutrients from the cyanobacterial culture filtrates.

  The Total Phenolic Content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of fresh and dried materials of Enicostemma littorale Blume were evaluated using the Folin-ciocalteau method, 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assays. Different drying treatments especially, microwave treated plant material led to significant reduction (p≤0.05) in antioxidant properties of E. littorale in methanolic extracts as compared to that of the boiling water extracts, which appeared to exhibit significantly stronger antioxidant potentials (p≤0.05) even in dried plant materials due to greater solubility of compounds, breakdown of cellular constituents as well as hydrolysis of tannins. A strong free radical scavenging activity in the chosen plant material suggests that it has great potential in the food industry as functional food ingredient.
