  The objective of this investigation is to determine the in vitro antimicrobial activity of the two novel compounds from Streptomyces. This antagonistic micro-organism was isolated and identified on the basis of morphological and biochemical study from the soil of the Northern district of Pabna, Bangladesh. The organism yielded maximum antimicrobial principle when grown at Czapek-Dox broth medium of pH 8 for 8 days at temperature 37.5C having rhamnose as carbon source. The antimicrobial principles were extracted from the fermentation broth by choloroform. The extract on chromatographic resolution yielded two antimicrobial compounds: Streptomysone-A (I) and Streptomysone-B (II). Both the compounds were screened for antimicrobial activity against eighteen pathogenic organisms which showed moderate to strong antimicrobial activity. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the compounds against five pathogenic organisms were found to be between 32 to 128μg ml‾1.

  The chloroform extract and the two novel compounds streptmysone-A (I) and streptomysone-B (II) of the Czapek-Dox (alkaline) culture filtrate of the Streptomyces species were studied for cytotoxic and acute toxicity activities. The cytotoxic activity of the compounds and the extract was determined by brine shrimp lethality bioassay while the acute toxicity study was performed on Swiss albino mice. The LC50 values of chloroform extract(CHCl3), compound (I) and (II), and standard ampicillin trihydrate were found to be 3.89, 6.31, 125.8 and 6.31Fg ml-1, respectively. The LD50 values were found to be 66.34 and 79.49mg kg-1 for the compound (1) and (II), respectively.

  The sub-acute toxicity studies of 5-Hydroxy-2 (Hydroxy-methyl) 4H- pyran-4 one, a metabolite of Aspergillus fumigatus was carried out in rats. The compound was administered at a dose of 300 μg/rat/day for 21 days. The gross general observation such as changes of body weight, hematological profiles, biochemical parameters of blood and the histopathology of the liver, kidney, heart, lung, spleen were investigated both in control and experimental rats. The body weights of the rats were slightly increased. The change of hematological and biochemical parameters were statistically insignificant. No abnormalities were found in the histopathology of the liver, kidney, heart, lung and spleen in the experimental group of rats when compared with control group of rats.
