  The hepatoprotective activity of the marine algae Gracilaria corticata was investigated against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) induced hepatotoxicity. AFB1 (1 ppm) induced hepatic damage was studied by assessing parameters such as body weight gain, liver weight, total protein, albumin and enzyme markers viz., transaminases (SGOT and SGPT), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The effect of co-administration of aqueous extract of G. corticata on the above parameter was further investigated. Hepatic damage was evidenced by significant (p<0.05) decreased level of body weight gain, liver weight, total protein and albumin. Co administration of rats with the aqueous extract of G. corticata showed a tendency to attain near normalcy. Elevated levels of total bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, LDH and ALP in aflatoxin B1 intoxicated rats were restored to normal level in the rats treated with aqueous extract (250 mg kg-1 body weight) and aflatoxin B1. Thus the study substantiates the hepatoprotective potential of aqueous extract of G. corticata.

  In this research, esterified Rice Bran Oil (RBO) and non-esterified RBO was investigated for its performance as a compression ignition engine fuel. In this context experiments were conducted on single cylinder water cooled diesel engine with diesel, RBO, preheated RBO and Bio-diesel (esterified RBO). Performance parameters like thermal efficiency, specific fuel consumption and emissions such as smoke, particulate mater, unburned hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen have been measured. The performance of the engine with diesel has been used as the basis for comparison.

  The present study was designed to evaluate the association of inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) alone and in combination with lipid profile in the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) since the cardio vascular disease (CVD) is considered to be a multifactorial disease driven by inflammatory reactions. One hundred and fifty patients were recruited for the study, of which, 75 belongs to control and 75 were test group. For the entire study population CRP and lipid profile were measured. Among the patients with complication (test group), there was a significant elevation in the levels of CRP and lipid profile than the control. It was also found that a combination of measurement of CRP with total cholesterol (TC) or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol testing may proven to be even a better marker of risk response in patients with CAD.
